David O. Russell's Abscam Film Gets New Actor & Late 2013 Release

The cast of David O. Russell's Abscam drama formerly known as American Bullshit is already off the charts with reunions including Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence from the director's Silver Linings Playbook last year, not to mention The Fighter cast members Christian Bale and Amy Adams, and Jeremy Renner and Louis C.K. just for good measure. Now Deadline has word that Alessandro Nivola (Howl, Grace is Gone, Jurassic Park III), has landed a role in the film as a prosecutor of the Abscam case that brought down many corrupt members of Congress decades ago. Also, there's a release already set. Read on!
The movie, written by Eric Warren Singer, tells the true story of Abscam, a sting operation in the 1970s and early 80s led by an FBI agent (Cooper) who teams with the world's best con man (Bale) in order to shine a light on corruption in Congress. A New Jersey state assembly leader (Renner) is also in the mix. Adams will play Maxine "Max" Gardner, the mistress and co-conspirator of Bale's character, and Lawrence will play Bale's character's wife, who is presumably unaware of all of his shady deeds. Sony thinks that sounds like an Oscar movie, so it gets a limited release on December 13th and will go wide on Christmas Day. There's a good chance these actors will be up for many awards, so we'll keep our eye on this one.
