"Where does your journey end?" Warner Bros has unveiled the first trailer for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, running a full two-minutes introducing us to a whole bevy of new characters and the old ones from An Unexpected Journey. Besides Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Richard Armitage as Thorin and Ian McKellen as Gandalf, we get to see Lee Pace as Thranduil, Orlando Bloom (back) as Legolas, Evangeline Lilly kicking ass as Tauriel, plus Luke Evans as Bard. And yes we even get a look at Smaug. This seems like a big step up from the first movie, more entertaining and adventurous. Have at it!
Watch the first trailer for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, from Warner Bros.:
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit… J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, being directed by Peter Jackson as three separate movies, is set in Middle-Earth 60 years before Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in a trilogy ten years ago. The films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, were shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest cameras. The Hobbit follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug lands in theaters in 3D & 48FPS on December 13th.

Well... ok, but the dragon looked... bad. It is just me or there is something wrong about him?

The CGI is probably not finished yet and probably won't be until just before the release date.

CGI isn't finished, same reason that orc climbing over the wall looked more like bologna than humanoid skin

Also, i think they are trying to keep it hidden in darkness, only really allowing you to see his teeth, the outline of his head AND (my fav) his eye! Staring down at poor bilbo, its the only thing u see of smaug for bit there and i love it!

Nice CG dwarves and orcs, geez...

well Orcs are notorious for always calling out sick and Dwarves don't fucking work for humans.

I meant elves. The elves look terrible.

Elves are worse than Dwarves...they despise we humans and are work week.

Says Mr. "I-don't-properly-capitalize-letters." Love ya. :p I can admit my usage of "Are" is wholly incorrect. Should be "Our." Eh.

CGI. CGI everywhere....kind of not super-convincing CGI, to boot. No way I'm not seeing this though.

I agree but they still have 6 months to finish it up. This happens with lots of movies, trailer footage uses incomplete CGI but the finished product is (usually) much better. I wouldn't worry.

I had that same thought watching this. It looks good, but so much CGI... I know they can't do the movie without it, but it looks like a damn video game.

Wow. The action looks like it's going to be incredible in this one. Obviously the cgi is going to get a lot more work before release, so I'm not worried about that yet.

Looks good, but I gotta say Smaug would totally get owned by DeathWing!lol

I'm sure meant Ancalagon The Black, and your inferior fantasy dragon was merely a slip.

Hate this damn CGI fairytale look. Everything looked better and more convincing in the LOTR trilogy even though it came out a decade ago. Bingo.

Unexpected Journey is probs better!

CGI looks so weak. uhgggg. Still will go watch this movie... but expectations are much lower especially after watching part 1 last year...

Can't decide if Evangeline Lilly is hotter as an Elf or an island castaway. Something to ponder for the next five minutes...two minutes...okay thirty seconds.

she's not that hot to begin with.

CGI... in overabundance. Why couldn't they do what they did with LOTR?

"Wow, the CGI for this movie that's out in six months looks unfinished and crappy on my little computer screen" - said every fanboy ever. Shut up already!

agreed - a lot of complainers on the internet.

That dragon head looked terrible. If that's the final version, then Jackson failed miserably. If that's not the final version they shouldn't have shown the dragon at all. It's been 32 years since Dragonslayer came out and still nobody has come close to topping Vermithrax Pejorative. CGI is a crutch, and not a very good one at that.

Wow Smaug is awful.... was that a pre-vis asset?

The Hobbit films are doing exactly the same things that made the Star Wars prequels so bland. Too much CGI and green screen stuff. Nothing looks real. My eyes pick up on CGI straight away and immediately my brain tells me it's not real and I have a disconnect to the action. the LOTR had a good balance, the Hobbit didn't and now this looks even worse. That's why old model spaceships from 70s cinema look more real than CGI spaceships from the 2000s. CGI has a plasticine look that is so far from lifelike it's disconcerting.

people are ridiculous its an early trailer release to get you pumped up and you all react like fools, relax most all action movie are packed with cgi for starters so give that excuse a break and if It really bugs you that much don't see it! don't watch anymore trailers!!
