The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Trailer

"Where does your journey end?" Warner Bros has unveiled the first trailer for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, running a full two-minutes introducing us to a whole bevy of new characters and the old ones from An Unexpected Journey. Besides Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Richard Armitage as Thorin and Ian McKellen as Gandalf, we get to see Lee Pace as Thranduil, Orlando Bloom (back) as Legolas, Evangeline Lilly kicking ass as Tauriel, plus Luke Evans as Bard. And yes we even get a look at Smaug. This seems like a big step up from the first movie, more entertaining and adventurous. Have at it!

Watch the first trailer for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, from Warner Bros.:

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit… J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, being directed by Peter Jackson as three separate movies, is set in Middle-Earth 60 years before Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in a trilogy ten years ago. The films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, were shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest cameras. The Hobbit follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug lands in theaters in 3D & 48FPS on December 13th.

I loved the first one and this one looks even better! Can't wait!

Max on Jun 11, 2013

Well, I came.

Nielsen700 on Jun 11, 2013

Well... ok, but the dragon looked... bad. It is just me or there is something wrong about him?

Szkari on Jun 11, 2013

The CGI is probably not finished yet and probably won't be until just before the release date.

Sean Kelly on Jun 11, 2013

CGI isn't finished, same reason that orc climbing over the wall looked more like bologna than humanoid skin

wafffles on Jun 11, 2013

Also, i think they are trying to keep it hidden in darkness, only really allowing you to see his teeth, the outline of his head AND (my fav) his eye! Staring down at poor bilbo, its the only thing u see of smaug for bit there and i love it!

Sky on Jun 11, 2013

Looks fun, more than a few inconsistencys to be seen in that short trailer though.

Brian Sleider on Jun 11, 2013

totally sold. TOTALLY SOLD!

Kento on Jun 11, 2013

First was great and this looks like a step up.

Xerxexx on Jun 11, 2013

Nice CG dwarves and orcs, geez...

Nick on Jun 11, 2013

well Orcs are notorious for always calling out sick and Dwarves don't fucking work for humans.

Xerxexx on Jun 11, 2013

I meant elves. The elves look terrible.

Nick on Jun 11, 2013

Elves are worse than Dwarves...they despise we humans and are work week.

Xerxexx on Jun 11, 2013

jeez. learn how to use the English language.

a guy on Jun 11, 2013

Says Mr. "I-don't-properly-capitalize-letters." Love ya. :p I can admit my usage of "Are" is wholly incorrect. Should be "Our." Eh.

Xerxexx on Jun 11, 2013

CGI. CGI everywhere....kind of not super-convincing CGI, to boot. No way I'm not seeing this though.

Chris Groves on Jun 11, 2013

I agree but they still have 6 months to finish it up. This happens with lots of movies, trailer footage uses incomplete CGI but the finished product is (usually) much better. I wouldn't worry.

davidshaw on Jun 11, 2013

I had that same thought watching this. It looks good, but so much CGI... I know they can't do the movie without it, but it looks like a damn video game.

cobrazombie on Jun 12, 2013

Wow. The action looks like it's going to be incredible in this one. Obviously the cgi is going to get a lot more work before release, so I'm not worried about that yet.

Elbak on Jun 11, 2013

Looks good, but I gotta say Smaug would totally get owned by DeathWing!lol

jah p on Jun 11, 2013

I'm sure meant Ancalagon The Black, and your inferior fantasy dragon was merely a slip.

David Banner on Jun 11, 2013

Jah p if you killed yourself would anyone care?

Pugiron on Jun 11, 2013

That didn't excite me as mush as I thought it would however I am still very much ready to see this film! Can not wait!!!

N. on Jun 11, 2013

its great to see orlando back! but my biggest disappointment was smaug! The dragon looks so....low quality lol....hope they fix it up

Rojage Geo on Jun 11, 2013

my thoughts exactly

Ege Sönmez on Jun 11, 2013

Hate this damn CGI fairytale look. Everything looked better and more convincing in the LOTR trilogy even though it came out a decade ago. Bingo.

fefe on Jun 11, 2013

Unexpected Journey is probs better!

Jackmooney9 on Jun 11, 2013

CGI looks so weak. uhgggg. Still will go watch this movie... but expectations are much lower especially after watching part 1 last year...

none none on Jun 11, 2013

Can't decide if Evangeline Lilly is hotter as an Elf or an island castaway. Something to ponder for the next five minutes...two minutes...okay thirty seconds.

wafffles on Jun 11, 2013

she's not that hot to begin with.

guest on Jun 11, 2013

CGI... in overabundance. Why couldn't they do what they did with LOTR?

Jordan Petersen on Jun 11, 2013

"Wow, the CGI for this movie that's out in six months looks unfinished and crappy on my little computer screen" - said every fanboy ever. Shut up already!

nitpickers can suck it on Jun 11, 2013

agreed - a lot of complainers on the internet.

DianeT on Jun 11, 2013

That dragon head looked terrible. If that's the final version, then Jackson failed miserably. If that's not the final version they shouldn't have shown the dragon at all. It's been 32 years since Dragonslayer came out and still nobody has come close to topping Vermithrax Pejorative. CGI is a crutch, and not a very good one at that.

racquetman on Jun 11, 2013

Wow Smaug is awful.... was that a pre-vis asset?

Andy on Jun 11, 2013

It looked pretty good on my monitor CGI-wise, pretty excited to see this. Obviously.

Carpola on Jun 11, 2013

Guest of Honor on Jun 11, 2013

The Hobbit films are doing exactly the same things that made the Star Wars prequels so bland. Too much CGI and green screen stuff. Nothing looks real. My eyes pick up on CGI straight away and immediately my brain tells me it's not real and I have a disconnect to the action. the LOTR had a good balance, the Hobbit didn't and now this looks even worse. That's why old model spaceships from 70s cinema look more real than CGI spaceships from the 2000s. CGI has a plasticine look that is so far from lifelike it's disconcerting.

Moothbert on Jun 11, 2013

then dont go see it

Sky on Jun 11, 2013

my thoughts exactly

kingknolla on Jun 12, 2013

No Benedict Cumberbatch?

David Banner on Jun 11, 2013

cobrazombie on Jun 12, 2013

Hell Yeah!!! Looks so good. Like I have been saying, this is going to be the good one.

DAVIDPD on Jun 11, 2013

Wow. I love seeing the new characters and ever expansive story lines. Nerd drool. Pants tee-pee.

Quanah on Jun 11, 2013

cool videogame!!!, oh wait, its another movie full of shitty CGI

Nicolas Dalli Bortolot on Jun 11, 2013

kLO on Jun 11, 2013

Too many changes

Pugiron on Jun 11, 2013

people are ridiculous its an early trailer release to get you pumped up and you all react like fools, relax most all action movie are packed with cgi for starters so give that excuse a break and if It really bugs you that much don't see it! don't watch anymore trailers!!
