Emperor

"Let's show them some good old fashioned American swagger." Roadside Attractions has debuted the latest official US trailer for Emperor, an indie historic drama starring Tommy Lee Jones and Matthew Fox as two WWII Generals who travel to Japan just as the war is ending to decide if Emperor Hirohito will be hanged as a war criminal. Along the way, Japanese student Aya (Eriko Hatsune) gets into the mix. This actually looks a lot bigger than an indie, with action scenes and potentially a few war flashbacks, as well as beautiful views of Japan after the war. I may try and see this sooner than later, I got a feeling I may enjoy it.

Watch the latest official US trailer for Peter Webber's Emperor, originally from Yahoo:

In the days immediately following the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II, on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones), the de facto ruler of Japan as Supreme Commander of the occupying forces, a leading Japanese expert, General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox) is charged with reaching a decision of historical importance: should Emperor Hirohito be tried and hanged as a war criminal? Peter Webber (The Girl with the Pearl Earring) directs Emperor with a script from Vera Blasi and David Klass (Kiss the Girls). Roadside Attractions will be releasing Emperor in theaters starting March 8th this spring.

I think it's a unique perspective on war that usually gets overlooked.

Hirohito thought he was a God. I love Japan, but no man will ever be a god on this planet. Not sure what to make of the film. Tv movie?

Has that kind of feel. I was waiting for a Downy commercial in the middle of the trailer.

That's a good point Daniel, but was part of Hirohito's surrender admitting that he wasn't a God? I watched a good documentary about the invention of the devil that had similar themes to what you said, the idea of good vs evil and how twisted folk got when carrying out these divine acts.

I was waiting for him to crawl into a lighted tunnel at the end of a creek. I'm sure it'll be in the movie somewhere.

...meh...after watching the excellent documentary series by Oliver Stone The Untold History of United States I can't take any of these so called history movies seriously...they all look too fake and over-glamourised...not calling it propaganda, don't get me wrong...it does not look too bad for a movie though..
