Independence Day

"Get on the wire, tell them how to bring those sons of bitches down." This is it. It's happening. The aliens are returning in 2015. 20th Century Fox has scheduled a release date for Independence Day 2, the sequel to Roland Emmerich's sci-fi action movie from 1996 starring Will Smith. We've been reporting on rumblings of back-to-back sequels reuniting Emmerich, Smith and Jeff Goldblum, but nothing has been confirmed yet and this is the first major sign that Fox is moving forward. The movie studio also re-arranged key release dates for a number of their major 2014 and 2015 movies currently in pre-production or filming as we speak.

Here are the five movies assigned new release dates by 20th Century Fox coming up over the next few years:

Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past - Opening May 23rd, 2014 (Originally June 18th, 2014)
Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Opening July 18th, 2014 (Originally May 23rd, 2014)
Michael Fassbender's Assassin's Creed - Opening June 19th, 2015 (Originally May 22nd, 2015)
Roland Emmerich's Independence Day 2 - Opening July 3rd, 2015 (19 Years After the Original)
Tim Burton's Peregrine's Home for Peculiars - Opening July 31st, 2015

Beyond a couple of smart shifts in their scheduling for the summers of 2014 and 2015, it's good to see Fox really pushing forward on Independence Day 2. It obviously needs a good 4th of July weekend to kick ass in again, because if they pull this off, it'll be one hell of a return and there's no better way to celebrate our Independence Day than kicking some alien ass. As for the others, I am already excited to see both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and X-Men: Days of Future Past and I think the new release slots they gave both of those movies will be much better in the long run. We'll be keeping an eye on the development of all of them.

I absolutely love ID4 but it should not get a sequel, let alone two. I'm still going to watch and who knows maybe they'll be good!

Maybe they'll use a flash drive this time in the aliens' USB port.

As long as he realizes that the comedy is why it's endearing, not the action or the story.

Thanks for the warning. I won't be fooled into a midnight screening of an ID4 movie ever again.
