Gravity - Best Movies of 2013

"I hate space!" We're in the thick of the awards season and in the middle of December, meaning Best of and Top 10 lists are hitting left and right. One of the latest to arrive is TIME Magazine's Top 10 Best Movies of 2013, curated by their critic Richard Corliss. The big news is that Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity tops it all, landing the coveted #1 spot as their Best Movie of the Year. Damn. That's going to piss off the critics who have started to come down hard on the film. Other notable picks include Spike Jonze's Her, which we loved too, David O. Russell's American Hustle, Disney's Frozen and the doc The Act of Killing. View his list below.

Here are Richard Corliss of TIME's Top 10 Best Movies of 2013 (via TIME.com):

10. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
9. 12 Years a Slave
8. The Act of Killing
7. Frozen
6. Fast & Furious 6
5. The Grandmaster
4. Her
3. American Hustle
2. The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza)
1. Gravity

Commenting on his #1 pick of Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, Corliss gushes: "An epic of desperate peril and profound wonder, Alfonso Cuar‪ón’s thrilling 3-D drama is a testament to human grit and groundbreaking technical ingenuity. It deserves to be seen once for the wow factor and a second time to try to figure out how Cuar‪ón and his digital savants managed to make the impossible seem so cinematically plausible." Indeed. This list is certain to stir up discussion, considering it has such a precarious balance of art house excellence and some Hollywood indulgence. Then again, most of these films will be on my own Top 10 list, so I can't help but find some common ground. We'll be seeing many more Best of lists this month. What do you think?

I enjoyed Fast Six but I'm surprised to see it here. I'm not surprised that man of steel isn't on here but it was possibly my favourite of the year. Good list otherwise.

Fast Five was better than Fast Six or whatever the hell it's called

Looks like a great list (from what I've seen). La Grande Bellezza is fantastic! The Bling Ring, Blue Jasmine and Before Midnight are currently some of my other favorite of the year!

These are my favourites of the year so far (still waiting to see Fast & Furious 6, Elysium, Kick Ass 2, Rush, Filth, Gravity, Captain Phillips, 12 Years a Slave, All Is Lost, Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska, Out of the Furnace, American Hustle, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Anchorman 2, Her and The Wolf of Wall Street): 10. Prisoners 9. Mud 8. 42 7. This Is The End 6. Star Trek Into Darkness 5. Trance 4. The Wolverine (Unrated Extended Cut) 3. Evil Dead (I love this movie but I want the unrated cut the filmmakers promised in the commentary, hopefully they come out with that soon enough) 2. Man of Steel (easily the most underrated film of the year and my favourite live-action DC comic-book adaptation thus far) 1. The World's End (might just be my favourite of the trilogy, the action's fantastic, the characters and actors are sublime, and the ending was a complete surprise, this film was amazing)

And what are your favorites so we can say they suck?

The great white hype movie. So boring. This was your favorite movie? I hated this movie. I hate even more that people think it's amazing.

Given some of Time's recent (& past) choices for "person of the year"... I think I'll just make up my own list as I go along.

Without going into detail, it was absolutely painful to sit through the 2-hour Her. And the critics absolutely loved it. I must have missed something.
