Hugh Jackman Joins the Cast of Neill Blomkamp's Next Film 'Chappie'
Now this casting is kind of awesome. Sci-fi filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is already in pre-production on his next movie, the comedy Chappie, set in Johannesburg, South Africa based on his 2003 short Tetra Vaal. We already know that Blomkamp has Dev Patel cast as the lead in the film, and will bring back his buddy Sharlto Copley to voice the main robot. It will also star the South African rap group Die Antwoord, too. Now Screen Daily (via SlashFilm) is reporting straight from the actor himself that Hugh Jackman has a small role in the sci-fi comedy involving a robot stolen by gangsters. This sounds like it's going to be so much fun.
Hugh Jackman himself made the reveal during a press conference at the Zurich Film Festival, where he was receiving the Golden Icon Award. After being questioned about a few other prospective projects, Jackman commented: "But I am doing a role in Neill's new film, called Chappie, which we shoot in Johannesburg. I'm there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year." Shooting will start later this year and continue into early next year. Blomkamp's Chappie, produced by MRC for Sony/TriStar Pictures, is already set for release starting March 27th, 2015. The comedy is about a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. Stay tuned for updates.

I'm pretty sure Blomkamp has iterated time and time again during the 'Elysium' press tour that 'Chappie' isn't a comedy. He said it has more humor than D9, but that the film still contains a fair amount of action and 'popcorn' elements.

I think it was more along lines of it's a comedy but won't seem like one to most people due to the darkness of the humor (listen to the D9 commentary, Blomkamp pretty much considers that film a comedy)

Jackman is an actor who gives it his all in every role. He will be great in this one too.

Elysium was very very disappointing. I hope Blomkamp isn't another one-hit wonder.

A lot of people, including myself, really liked Elysium. And it's not like it bombed at the box office so I've already come to the conclusion that he isn't a one hit wonder.

Really? Quite enjoyed it. Had no expectations though. Only saw one trailer.

Good grief. Jackman & Blomkamp... even I haven't had THAT dream. Opening day viewing.

YES!! Blomkamp's films are great! Both District 9 and Elysium were superb despite some experimental filming in Elysium that made me dizzy--I CAN'T WAIT FOR CHAPPIE!
