Jeff Goldblum & Bill Pullman Coming Back for 'Independence Day 2'

Just yesterday, Independence Day fans who have been waiting years for the recently dated sequel coming in 2015 had some bad news. International superstar Will Smith is just too expensive to take a lead role in the sequel from director Roland Emmerich (his film White House Down arrives this Friday), but that doesn't mean some of the other original stars aren't coming back. In fact, Emmerich said the cast of the sequel will be about half new characters, and half from the original film. Now Emmerich has confirmed two of the desired returning cast members are confirmed: Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman. More below!
In a Q&A with Erik Davis from Movies.com at the Apple Store in New York City, Emmerhich confirmed that Goldblum and Pullman will reprise their characters from the first film, but didn't specify where they will be at in the sequel. Goldbum played nerdy computer scientist David Levinson who discovered the aliens countdown to their attack and eventually the virus that brought down their mother ship. Pullman played the inspirational President Whitmore who is damn good giving a monologue on the spot before flying to fight aliens. We're certainly interested to see where each of these characters ends up 20 years after the events of the first film, but it's early days yet, so stay tuned for more info.

This is good news but can't they just take ten mil off the 400 mil CGI budget and get will back?

First let me say that Pullman's speech/scene on the airfield is fantastic but that still of him looks like he is yelling, "I am going to eat the crap out of this mini-muffin!"

The Prez, having lead (literaly) the entire world to victory against the aliens gets the constitution amended and is elected to president for life. With no job worries to worry about, he perfects his fighter pilot and special forces tactics. David, after recconecting with his wife, took a job designing software to help defeat any new aliens as well as new recycling techniqes to create an entire starfighter line made entirely of used aluminum cans. Unfortunately he is an alcoholic now, suffering the regret of loosiing his friend Col. Steven Hillard in the new starfighter's initial test flight.

It is worth the money the get will smith... Him not being in it might kill it for lots of ppl.

I AGREE! Otherwise, this sounds like a straight to DVD, like a TimeCop 8 or something. Why don't they just give him a percentage of the profits? They will make their money back easily!

Smith wasn't the only star of ID and many people don't think of him when they think of ID, so who cares if he's in the sequel or not. He's really not the deal breaker here. On top of that Smith's scientofreakiness is getting more public and lot of people see him as Tom Cruise 2, but instead of jumping on sofas he french kisses his own teenage son on tv.

OK so ya' gotta' have Judd Hirsch back if you're getting Goldblum. "Oy vey, again with the aliens?!"

Wow. No Captain Steven Hiller is starting to feel like a big 'F'-you to Will Smith.

The Man Named Jayne needs to be back.

Also, I can't wait to see how Goldblum will work in his trademark, "Must go faster!" line.

This has nothing to do with Independence day although i'm glad Will isn't in it but just bought the Avengers on Blu-Ray for $30 an saw it for the 1st time, Gotta say i'm dissappointed. I was waiting for the big action and awesome story but it just wasn't there for me. I put off watching this because i knew in my gut i'd prob be dissapointed and i was. Ya i like The Dark Knight Rises better and watch the Bane sewer fight all the time. The costumes in the Avengers look like cosplay comic con uniforms and it just made it cheesy. The coolest character in the movie for me was the Agent whatshisname that got killed. Sorry i know people do love this movie but i think its more for the kids.

I agree with Dark Knight Rises. Loved it. Bane was like a James Bond Villain...Scary and funny. Like an Angry version of ButterBean(Ha!). Loved Avengers. I don't know. I kind of wish Will Smith was in it. It needs the charm.

I don't hate will smith but lately his ego seems to be out of control. I think they could have another character brought in and the movie could be just as good. The thing that i didn't like about ID was at the end when they have to bring down the shield and escape just like Return of the Jedi. When you have to rip another movie off like that its just not cool. Rubs me the wrong way.

I love marvel and all the characters, its like... the movie was too clean. Not enough scuff marks and grit. They can get it right like they did with Blade and Punisher War Zone but i get why they don't cause of $ marketing children etc.

'Not enough scuff marks and grit" may mean you're part of the problem that superhero movies are digging themselves into.

Maybe but i felt ripped off even if i was late to the party. Joss whedons cool , i liked buffy and Angel and those series had nice dark undertones. But like i said Blades been around for awhile now and showed you can make Comic movies without 1 hand tied around your balls. The cast was good in Avengers but it was nowhere close to all the hype or the $30 they still want for it. I alrdy put my copy on craigslist for $10 for the Blu-Ray dvd combo pack. Interested?

Not really, I already have it. I'm glad every superhero movie doesn't have to be dark for me to enjoy it.

How can he be too expensive when the film will go on to generate over $500-$800mil worldwide easily. Not including DVD/BluRay/Streaming/PPV ect..
Chad on Jun 25, 2013

Because I think they are using "expensive" to mean more than money. Like Will would require top billing, and they don't want this movie to be about one character but a lot of characters. So they may not be willing to accept the other costs of making it with Will.

Well I don't know about most people, but I consider Independence Day to be a 'Will Smith movie' first, and an action, scifi, or any other designation next. I think this will be just fine without him, but 90's Will Smith was the centrepiece of that movie for me. Of course, I'm fine with these guys returning.

I'll take Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman over Will Smith any day of the week.

I think Will Smith has been a bad boy, and he's being punished. ID4 brought in around $2 Billion(adjusted, all sales), if this one only brings in half with WS in it, how little will it earn with out him?

It's really good news that Bill and Jeff are in for ID 2 but it's such a shame that Will won't be part of it. I wanted all three of them back.

Doesn't need Smith. The '90's Smith is liked is gone since a long time....Glad that Goldblum and Pulmann are onboard. Too bad that Quaid and Spinner wont return (or could they!?).
