Joseph Gordon-Levitt Gets Lead Role in 'Sin City: A Dame To Kill For'

Though Johnny Depp had once been rumored for a part in the long-gestating sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, his role has been taken by another big name instead. Deadline has word that The Dark Knight Rises and Looper star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is taking the role of Johnny, one of the core characters in the ensemble graphic novel adaptation. The sequel is already in production and Gordon-Levitt will shoot his role sometime this month. This means Gordon-Levitt will reunite with Bruce Willis, who Deadline says is returning for the comic book sequel along with Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson and Jessica Alba.
In addition, we already know Jaime King is reprising her role as Wendy, twin-sister of the blonde bombshell of a prostitute Goldie from the first film while Jamie Chung is playing the roller-skating assassin Miho, originally played by Devon Aoki. Plus, it sounds like Clive Owen is confirmed to return as Dwight (though it was thought another actor might replace him) and Dennis Haysbert is taking over for the late Michael Clarke Duncan. That's quite a cast already, but Deadline is hearing that some other tough guy actors like Josh Brolin (the only specific name mentioned) are being lined up as well.
This should be a cool role for Gordon-Levitt who has been super busy over the past few years. This month alone he'll be running around quite a lot. In addition to shooting Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, the actor will be heading to the 2013 Sundance Film Festival where his directorial debut Don Jon's Addiction will premiere, and he's also hosting the awards ceremony that closes the festival in Park City, Utah. However, one thing he will not be doing is Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, despite being on the shortlist recently. All this after a year where he had a lead role in Looper, one of the best sci-fi films of the year, and vital supporting roles in The Dark Knight Rises and Lincoln. The guy is unstoppable right now. Sound good?
Update: Dimension Films has confirmed the casting news with a press release. Here's the information they include: Gordon-Levitt will play "Johnny," a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game. "Johnny is a new character in the Sin City world and we are excited for what Joseph will bring to the role," said Rodriguez and Miller. Production is underway, so stay tuned.

I wonder if Josh Hartnett's character will make an appearance, dude was scary, disturbing and cool in equal messure.

Sounds better than Depp, i feel Johnny Depp can only play Johnny Depp now in films and it just ruins it for me.

I like him, he just always looks the same, it seems to me. Will they make him look different?

It was an honest question, we should be grateful that the Films have introduced a new audience to Graphic Novels and not mock them for not having done so already.

Thank you! just recently got into the Watchmen prequel comics as well. Im a couple years too late, but hey Im on it lol

Apart from the odd comic here and there I probably wouldn't have gotten into them myself if it wasn't for films like Sin City and V for Vendetta! Still haven't got around to The Minutemen yet but I've heard good things, last one I read was Red Son which was about Superman if he had arrived in the USSR instead of the USA.. now that would make for a wonderful film/mini-series 🙂

Don't get me wrong I love JGL, but is there something he isn't starring in these days?
Alan Geiss on Jan 8, 2013
99%+ of movies coming out next year will not have JGL in it. So take your pick.

God this sounds amazing. JGL in a true noir film that's violent, brutal and pulpy film. It's like a dream come true. Love seeing him branch out his roles and still focusing on acting instead of only directing. I always wanted to see him in a noir film like this. Inception and DKR gave us a taste. After that I want to see him lead a hard, serious sci-fi piece. Like a true adaption of I, Robot or Total Recall or make movies like Minority Report, Limitless and Blade Runner. Can you imagine a dark, serious, noiry version of Limitless with JGL in the lead? In my opinion, JGL is the closest thing we have right now to prime Harrison Ford. He's so good he pulled off the first Batman/Bruce Wayne succession in the film world. Can't wait. Glad he's hit superstardom young.

Gordon-Levitt is Fit for NOIR Genre I think if he plays role of some psychopathic murderer guy he can win the show , really love him in KILLSHOT. Film has great potential to show us best actings for cinematic comic book adaptions. This is city full of sins and i dont wana see some ordinary guys First one was masterpiece to me but i had compliment about low volume of action sequences , i hope this one fix it. Dame you Robert , Bring the Dame On!

Love JGL and he seems to be picking roles in movies that turn out great, here's hoping to that trend continuing with Sin City.

Ohhhh Yeaaaaa....!! he is just right for the role. he can pull it off just perfect. He can suit playing a gangster aswell, if they want to remake scarface/godfather i would consider him in it but thats if they want to otherwise they could leave the classics alone.

Awesome stuff. I'm just glad that we are finally getting a sequel to Sin City. Such a great movie, and I hope that they give it's home market release the same treatment as the first...allowing us to watch the stories separately, and in any order we choose.
