Joseph Gordon-Levitt Rumored as Top Choice to Lead 'Doctor Strange'

Doctor Strange / Joseph Gordon-Levitt

It sounds like Marvel is keen on working with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Towards the beginning of the year, there were rumblings that The Dark Knight Rises star was being eyed for a lead role in Guardians of the Galaxy, but he turned down the role and ended up taking a role in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For instead. However, a new rumor has popped up from Latino Review saying that Gordon-Levitt is the top choice to lead Doctor Strange, a film which Kevin Feige has said will be part of Phase Three of Marvel's cinematic universe along with Ant-Man from director Edgar Wright. Could this news be made official at Comic-Con?

At the very least, it's likely that Doctor Strange will be one of the projects officially announced during Marvel's panel, taking one of the release dates that are a few years out. If you're unfamiliar, Dr. Strange is a brilliant but arrogant neurosurgeon who found his gift taken away from him after a terrible car accident resulted in extreme nerve damage to his hands. Pushed into obscurity, Strange traveled to the Himalayas where he was trained by a Tibetan sorcerer to hone in on psychic powers and mystical abilities, giving him the amazing mind powers, rather than pure muscle, which he uses to battle powerful villains.

Gordon-Levitt is riding a big wave of success right now following great recent turns in films like Looper, The Dark Knight Rises and Lincoln. In addition, his directorial debut Don Jon, which he also leads as an actor, is getting released later this year after some great buzz at the Sundance Film Festival. While we're not sure what to expect from a Doctor Strange movie, getting someone like Gordon-Levitt to bring the character to life is a smart choice, but we'll have to wait and see if this rumor comes true, or if someone else will end up stepping into the role. Comic-Con should have more answers.

I really liked the idea of Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Strange. Whoever it is, I hope it's someone older.

It really depends on which version of Dr. Strange they're hoping to emulate. Seeing as the MCU has thus far been using an almagamation of the Marvel Universe and Ultimate Universe. The later finds him as a younger character which would bring Joseph Gordon-Levitt in line with that particular vision. Plus, he's good in pretty much everything he does, so I'm totally down with that.

Are you kidding me, so this is possibly as rumoured the most original choice and inspired choice that Marvel could have coughed up to play Dr.Strange. I know The Avengers doesn't have it's share of fairly young members and I can see why Marvel would want to do that, but Dr.Strange needs to be with an older and more experienced actor. If this is true Marvel might as well have brought Tom Cruise to play Iron Man instead of Robert Downey Jr.

Hopefully this happens, that way he can be in a project that is more "Strange" than his usual projects, this would be awesome and not to mention getting a well known actor to play a character that might be overlooked by the general population, those who do not watch or read Marvel material apart from films, this could help the film get some buzz

I have no problems with JGL as Dr. Strange, he's a very talented actor and I'm sure would do great but when I think of Dr. Strange the first two actors that come to mind are Patrick Dempsey and/or Liam Neeson.

Not going to watch no fucking young Dr. Strange. Why not George Clooney?
