Over two years ago, we learned that Ryan Gosling was going to direct and star in a remake of The Idolmaker at MGM, but a month after the story broke, the actor had to step away from the project due his busy future slate which included The Place Beyond the Pines and Gangster Squad at the time. Now the project is back in the spotlight, but not with Gosling. The Wrap has word that Justin Timberlake, hot off a spectacular performance at the VMAs (which included an *NSYNC reunion), is gearing up to produce the remake of the 1980 film directed by Taylor Hackford. But will the musician also star in the film? Read on!
The original film told the story about about the life of rock promoter/producer Bob Marcucci, who discovered Frankie Avalon and Fabian, and while that would be an interesting role for Timberlake to take with his work in the music industry, right now he has no plans to star. However, the right script and director could get the actor interested in getting in front of the camera. Either way, MGM thinks they will benefit from Timberlake's music industry experience. Production is expected to begin sometime next year, but a director still hasn't been announced. Stay tuned for more.
