Kellan Lutz

Just this past February, we learned that Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger director Renny Harlin was working on Hercules 3D, his own project about the mythological Greek hero set up at Nu Image and Millennium, which will likely end up competing with Brett Ratner's Hercules project starring Dwayne Johnson and currently slated for release in the summer of 2014. Production is supposed to begin this May in Bulgaria, and now Harlin finally has a lead for his film as Heat Vision reports The Twilight Saga star Kellan Lutz will play the title hero in the film that puts a little bit of romance at the heart of the familiar story. Read on!

Though larger plot details aren't available, the trade says this one has a love story at its core as the mortal princess of Crete falls in love with the son of Zeus, even though she's been promised to the Greek hero's older brother instead. This isn't one of those projects that was set up just to compete with the Paramount and MGM co-production from Ratner In fact, Harlin's project has been in development at Millennium since 2007 with a script from Conan the Barbarian wrtier Sean Hood and newcomer Hanna Weg that takes a revisionist approach to Hercules. Harlin says, "It's closer to Gladiator than flying horses.”

However, casting Lutz doesn't really give us much confidence. The guy isn't exactly the most charismatic or talented of leading men. However, Harlin seems to think he's the right guy saying, "It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history — and Kellan has exactly that, personality. He's not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character, and he impressed me with his passion and heart." Funnily enough, Lutz is already experienced with mythology on the big screen after playing Poseidon in The Immortals from 2011. While it'd be nice if this was a breakout role for Lutz to show his talent, this already feels like the loser of the Hercules films.

Two project and two mediocre directors, man that sucks. At least one of the two has the advantage of having The Rock..
