Kickstart This: 5 Second Films' Feature-Length 1980s-Style Slasher

Dude Bro Massacre 3

Welcome back to another edition of Kickstart This, FirstShowing's weekly column dedicated to spreading the word about cool indie projects that need your help to become a reality. This week, we're featuring a ridiculous new horror project influenced by slasher horror movies from the 1980s called Dude Bro Party Massacre 3. It's the first feature-length (horror) movie from the folks at 5 Second Films, who you likely know from their quick comedy videos they've been making every day for the last five years. Take a look at their pitch video below, leave a comment with your thoughts, and don't forget to donate if you can. Check it!

If you're not familiar with 5 Second Films, they're a comedy troupe of 20-somethings based out of Los Angeles who have worked with awesome people like Patton Oswalt, Doug Benson, Eddie Pepitone, "Weird Al" Yankovic, and tons more. They've been featured in the pages of Wired, Spin, and TIME, plus on shows like CNN and "Tosh.0", and have garnered tons of internet attention and a loyal audience because of their consistent schedule putting out new comedy every weekday.

In October of 2009, the group created a short horror parody called Dude Bro Massacre 3 (watch the original video here) and recently decided that they want to expand the concept into a full length feature. They also made a longer trailer for it that you can watch right here, which gives you a pretty good sense of the kind of craziness you'll see if this project gets funded. (Personally, I love the Frisbee kill.)

In addition to the wild plot about a bunch of bros forced to stay in a lakeside cabin because of a prank gone wrong, the audience will see the movie as if we're watching a VHS tape that recorded a late-night broadcast of DBPM3 in the 1980s. So we'll see the movie itself, but then it will cut away to host segments, period-appropriate commercial breaks (which will likely be worth the price of donating alone), and fake news alerts. With the horrific killer Motherface on the loose, the 5 Second Films team is aiming to feature the most on screen kills in any slasher film… ever. Check out their full pitch video below:

For more on Dude Bro Party Massacre III, and to help support the project, visit its Kickstarter page. The 5SF team is looking to raise a grand total of $200,000 by Monday, July 1st, and they're not even halfway there yet. If you'd like to see a ridiculous, gore-filled, practical effects-driven horror parody, donate and spread the word about this project on Facebook, Twitter, and anywhere else you can think of.

That's all for this week's Kickstart This. Feel free to e-mail me at if you find a cool film-related project that needs some extra attention to meet its goal. My inbox is always open, and if you send in any Kickstarter or IndieGoGo film project, I can't promise we'll feature it, but I will always take a look at it. I've received a ton of especially awesome submissions from you guys over the past few weeks, and I plan on featuring many of them here very soon. As always, thanks so much for your support of these projects because they absolutely could not be completed without the help of film lovers like you. Thoughts?

YES! This needs to get made. I can see this becoming a cult hit already.
