Kirsten Dunst Joins Michael Shannon in Jeff Nichols' 'Midnight Special
by Ethan Anderton
August 12, 2013
Earlier this summer, we learned that Joel Edgerton would join yet another reunion of director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) and actor Michael Shannon. At the time the project was an untitled sci-fi film with plot details kept under tight wraps. The only information was that it was "a present day sci-fi chase film." We guess it might be a project Nichols had talked about elsewhere called Midnight Special. Now Deadline confirms our guess, and they also have word that the Warner Bros. film has gained Kirsten Dunst, fresh off sci-fi romance in Upside Down, as the female lead. And we now have some brief details on the story.
The story is said to follow a father and his 8-year old who are forced to go on the run when they realize the boy has some kind of special powers. That jives with what we heard about the film being called a "government chase film" and having similarities to Starman, so we can assume the boy becomes the subject of pursuit and curiosity of the authorities. This definitely sounds like something completely new for Nichols, and with a solid cast rounded up so far, we're excited.

I could not be more excited about this! I have never been really fond of her, but I think Kirsten could really shine under Jeff Nichols.
