Kurtzman & Orci Working on Universal's Classic Monsters Universe?
Now that Marvel has paved the way for multiple films with different characters to exists in the same cinematic universe, thanks to The Avengers, other studios are starting to make moves to do the same. Warner Bros. is merging Man of Steel with Batman, Fox might be bringing Fantastic Four and X-Men together in the future, and now Universal might be doing the same thing with their classic movie monsters. We already know writing and producing partners Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are producing remakes of Van Helsing and The Mummy, and now it sounds like those could lead to something bigger.
Speaking with IGN, Orci revealed that there have been talks about a Universal Monsters universe:
"There's an interesting thing that could happen at Universal where they have this amazing library of their old monsters and these kinds of heroes, and the idea of trying to create a universe. Van Helsing, and we're also producing The Mummy for them. We're kind of imagining updating these kinds of things. You don't want to just make remakes when you're doing a thing, unless it's worthy of being a remake, but when you have an idea for something that can actually be made different and yet be true to what it was. We just had a notion of how to make it modern and have a slightly different tone. It's not going to be just a remake."
Now that's just a writer talking about ideas that have been thrown around, and these are ideas that might not even come to fruition. But since Universal has this catalog of classic movie monsters, it would be cool to see various characters from each film pop up in other monster movies. Of course, the idea of it all leading to a mash-up featuring multiple monsters seems a bit cheesy and hard to make believable, but maybe Kurtzman and Orci can make it work? As of now, Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) is supposed to tackle Van Helsing with Tom Cruise potentially taking the title role and Andres Muschietti (Mama) is taking on The Mummy, so stay tuned for anymore updates.
Do these fuckers have to be involved in everything?

I think they can have okay ideas, but need other writers to handle the heavy lifting.

I am all for this and it could definitely work. It has already been done. In the 1940s there was a Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe that began crossing over with "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman". Then "House of Frankenstein" brought Dracula, The Wolfman, and Frankenstein all together. 1939's "Dracula" kicked it off the way Iron Man did. If you watch all of those oldies together, they are a cohesive story. With two talented writers like Kurtzman and Orci involved, bring it on!
