Magnolia Picking Up LvT's 'Nymphomaniac', But It May Miss Cannes

It's official. Magnolia Pictures has secured US distribution rights to Lars von Trier's already-controversial new film Nymphomaniac, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg as exactly that. Deadline broke the news last night after being tipped off to the late night sale following screening of footage at the Berlin Film Festival. Magnolia has followed up with a full press release today, confirming that they've jumped on this well before anyone in public has seen any footage, which must mean good things already. Along with that news, came a tip that it may not make it to Cannes after all, plus a "second still" showing Gainsbourg naked with two guys.

With Nymphomaniac getting a strong sales preview in Berlin this week, news about the film has started to hit from all sides. In the release on the acquisition, Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles stated: "After the tremendous and never predictable experience of distributing Melancholia, we couldn't be more excited to be working with Mr. von Trier again on the NYMPH()MANIAC films. He's such an exciting and talented filmmaker—it's an honor and a thrill to be associated." That confirms there's more than one and the "()" in the title is real. Beyond that, while the film is still being finished, it's unlikely it will show in Cannes by May.

"Four editors were working around the clock to meet the Cannes deadline, but we had to give it up - after 268 script pages, 11 weeks of shooting and with 100 hours of material it would have been rape to finish the two films in time for the festival," producer and CEO of Zentrope Entertainments Peter Aalbæk Jensen told Cineuropa via The Playlist. Well that's unfortunate to hear, though anything could happen, Gilles Jacob could change his mind. I'm sure Magnolia will be doing some marketing there anyway, and I expect it to be ready by late summer or at the most, by Toronto in September. It's only February and we have a ways to go.

In addition to all this news, UK distributor Artificial Eye tweeted out the second photo from Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac - click here. This one is a lot spicier than the beat-up-in-the-alley shot we saw last week.

We already know von Trier is planning to split this Nymphomaniac epic sexual adventure into two films, shooting a "softer and more explicit version of each." French-English actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, who appeared explicitly in von Trier's Antichrist a few years ago, will play Joe, as the story is about her "hidden erotic desires" and spans her life story from a young age to age 50. Beyond Gainsbourg, the film's cast also features Stellan Skarsgård and Shia LaBeouf, plus Stacy Martin, Jamie Bell, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Connie Nielsen, Mia Goth, Udo Kier, Jean-Marc Barr and Caroline Goodall. The Magnolia press release only states: "As recently announced Nymphomaniac will be completed ultimo 2013." Stay tuned for updates as they arrive, including whether or not they'll be releasing the X-rated version VOD.

Looks like a real classy film...

I can't help but think von Trier wanted to reify his masturbatory fantasies. "I know, Charlotte, how about a movie where you are a nympho....and there's a point somewhere I'm sure. We'll get to that later."
