Watch: Aaron Paul in Surprisingly Beautiful 'Need for Speed' Trailer

Need for Speed

"I will find strength, find guidance, and I will triumph." Well, we weren't expecting this. The first trailer for DreamWorks' adaptation of the racing video game series Need for Speed has arrived, and it's hauntingly beautiful and action-packed all at the same time. Using a slow, sweeping orchestral score and a gorgeous opera voice, the soundtrack is juxtaposed with the fast-paced action in the film starring "Breaking Bad" regular Aaron Paul. This looks intense, and just might give the Fast & Furious franchise a run for its money, bringing some emotional weight to the adrenaline-fueled action. Or this could just be a trick. Watch!

Here's the first trailer for Scott Waugh's Need for Speed, originally from Apple:

Need for Speed is directed by stuntman turned director Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) and written by George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum), John Gatins (Real Steel) and producer George Gatins. Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, muscle car mechanic and street racer Tobey (Aaron Paul) gets out of prison determined to settle the score with the man responsible for his false conviction. Tobey tears up the road in a gritty cross-country journey— one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots and Michael Keaton also star in the film arriving next year March 14th, 2014.

The plot is kinda meh, but the trailer is something I wasn't expecting for a Need for speed game adaptation. Remains to be seen.

The word 'pretentious' embodies this 100%. It looks like it might be okay though.

OfficialJab on Sep 25, 2013

Oh the word pretentious is thrown around so much on online forums and boards. It's a word one person looked up and now everyone uses to make them seem..."pretentious"

cg on Sep 25, 2013

Whether or not it's overused doesn't change that it applies here.

OfficialJab on Sep 25, 2013

I have to disagree. Looks to me like old school action, mixed with thrill, tension and excitement; it also seems as though the marketing is rightfully differentiating itself from other car franchises, namely Fast and Furious. I welcome a movie like this.

cg on Sep 25, 2013

And I agree it looks that way. This voiceover and music are trying to apparently sell it as a sincere emotional story too though. If the actual movie succeeds at that (or even attempts it) I'll eat my hat. I think 'rightfully' differentiating itself from F&F is probably pushing it. We'll have to see, but if that preview had been the same, but ended with the words Fast & Furious a few years ago, I wouldn't have thought twice.

OfficialJab on Sep 25, 2013

The word "pretentious" is the worst word to describe a film. It makes 0 sense to describe a film that way.

BryceH6 on Sep 25, 2013

'characterized by assumption of dignity or importance, especially when exaggerated or undeserved' I don't see how. If the filmmakers pretend they're making high art but it ends up (hopefully not) being Generic Car Crime Movie #100, then the shoe fits. No movie ever is guilty of this? For real?

OfficialJab on Sep 25, 2013

How bout' every film by Nicholas Winding Refn? Ok I'll admit, I am just trolling but unfortunately, some people really think that is the case.

Tey on Sep 25, 2013

I find your use of 'pretentious' pretentious.

Well, doesn't seem as epic as the music makes it but it might be good. Why does the music sound familiar though? I know I've heard it before but can't place it.

Isildur_of_Numenor on Sep 25, 2013

The song is Sarajevo by Max Richter and used on the Promethius trailer.

W. on Sep 25, 2013

Oh that's right! Beautiful piece of music. Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

Jesse needs to stop racing, we have to cook!

Chris Groves on Sep 25, 2013

I am surprisingly liking that trailer!

HyperJ on Sep 25, 2013

Surprisingly good, but part of me feels like the film might not be as good as this trailer and the music makes it. But I'm glad that they certainly made it NOT look like a typical action/racing "high octane" movie...but who knows if the actual film is like that or not.

Chris Groves on Sep 25, 2013

yeah they might be pulling another "planes"

Matthew Sam Russell on Sep 26, 2013

I think this trailer is planned to not looks like another fast and furious style movie.

toonfed on Sep 25, 2013

This looks like a "homemade" film with bad compositions and laced with crappy CGI. Thank God for Aaron Paul!

Tey on Sep 25, 2013

I seriously hate how blockbuster film making has forever changed audiences perception of a film. Every film is not going to have the budget of Transformers or Avatar and require extensive amounts of cgi like Pacific Rim. In reference to home made, are you blind? Home made is a film made by a junior high school student, but yet this trailer shows bugattis, and a few other exotic cars, helicopter shots etc. which definitely put it over the fence beyond "home made"

cg on Sep 25, 2013

Bugattis, exotic cars and helicopter shots can't hide poor composition and framing. You obviously misunderstood me, i didn't say it looked "homemade" because of it's budget as you implied since you compared it with Avatar, but because of it's cinematography plus some effect shots were... subpar. Films with a lot less budget like Mud looks way better than this.

Tey on Sep 25, 2013

Mud is a completely different film, and you are comparing apples to oranges now. As far as CGI I have seen far worse in the last year i.e. Jack the Giant Killer, the studio may also still be in the process of working on the CGI. Many times trailers are released without the film fully edited or even shot.

cg on Sep 25, 2013

Also could you elaborate on the composition and framing? I thought the cinematography looked well done. It's no wally pfister but it is in line with the tone the trailer seems to be going towards.

cg on Sep 25, 2013

Some shots just feel...weird. It could be because it is unique or it could just be poorly composed. I'll just have to watch the entire film to find out, but judging by this particular trailer... it feels like a expensive amateurish production.

Tey on Sep 25, 2013

Name one poorly composed shot then so we can critique it together. I personally think this trailer is shot (& edited) beautifully, even though if it has a certain 'glossy' (or non-gritty) look that may not be your cup of tea. But bad CG? Nah.

HyperJ on Sep 25, 2013

By comparing NFS with Mud I was trying to make a point that you don't need Avatar or Transformers budget to look good. And Yes, I totally agree with you that the CGI for Jack the Giant Slayer was really bad. I hope NFS improves it's effects.

Tey on Sep 25, 2013

I think you mean CGI, and what part in this trailer even had any overly noticable CGI?

Chazzy on Sep 25, 2013

Noted. Thx. Try super yellow flaming car at 0.56.

Tey on Sep 25, 2013

i was hating on the idea of this movie but damn that trailer was dope!

Snowmanfloza on Sep 25, 2013

Bugatti Bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Timothy Francis on Sep 25, 2013

I'm down. if you saw the teaser during E3, they seem to rely heavily on practical effects.

Jacob Denton on Sep 25, 2013

We'll see I am very mixed on this one. I love Aaron paul he is an incredibly talented movie but this movie looks like its either going to be great or horrid

Chris Scott on Sep 25, 2013

If they would have done the "Most Wanted" game storyline that would have been pretty awesome, the rapsheets and characters in that game are pretty awesome.

Fidel Reyes on Sep 25, 2013

this is a fake trailer right? XD ...... fanmade? 🙂 ........... seriously this looks low budget ._.

Sam on Sep 26, 2013

I'm sure this movie is pretty low budget for Hollywood standards. There are no big name actors (Aaron Paul doesn't exactly command a huge salary) and most of the effects are pretty basic. Doesn't mean it's going to be a terrible movie...although likely for other reasons...

TheOct8pus on Sep 26, 2013

Trailer would have worked better without the voice-over. And fuck! I hate the new YT hidden control layout.

cobrazombie on Sep 26, 2013

Where is Maverick & Goose?

Jimmy Love on Sep 26, 2013

Better be a "No Bugatti was harmed in the making of this film" in the credits.

avconsumer2 on Sep 26, 2013

I hope he says "Bitch" at least once in this film.

TheOct8pus on Sep 26, 2013
