Must Watch: Gavin Hood's 'Ender's Game' First Exhilarating Trailer

"You'll be the finest commander we've ever trained." It's time. Summit has debuted the teaser trailer for Gavin Hood's Ender's Game adaptation, unveiled during a Google+ hangout today promoting the launch. Asa Butterfield stars as Ender Wiggin, an intelligent young boy recruited into the International Fleet's Battle School, where he trains in military tactics to defeat the buggers if they ever invade again. This is the same trailer I flipped out over at CinemaCon, and opens and ends with epic scenes that should make your jaw drop. Everything about this footage looks awesome, even the CGI. This is why I am so insanely excited!
Watch the first official trailer for Gavin Hood's Ender's Game movie, in high def from YouTube:
70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion. Ender's Game, based on Orson Scott Card's beloved 1985 novel of the same name, is written & directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, Rendition, X-Men Origins) produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci of K/O Paper Products. Asa Butterfield stars as Ender Wiggin, with Harrison Ford as Colonel Graff, plus Nonso Anozie, Moises Arias, Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin and Viola Davis. Summit/Lionsgate will be releasing Ender's Game in theaters November 1st later this year.

I appreciate that this was so bad you had to leave not one, not two, but three disparaging comments.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but no reason that you need to spread it across 3 separate comments (that aren't in response to someone else's comment). Honestly, it just makes your comments and opinions look much more childish and less respectable.

This might all have something to do with the fact that I'm high on pain killers right now. I didn't even think of that before watching the trailers. The pain killers mixed with the medication I take for my bipolar disorder, that is.

I'm honestly kind of confused by the scorn I'm receiving, but I don't do this for approval. I actually like it when I annoy/anger people. However, don't act like you've never seen a trailer that's made you recoil from how bad it looked. And don't act like you've never written a negative comment in your life. You may not agree with me, and in all honesty I hope you don't, but that's no reason to act hypocritical.

Really? I loved the book and story overall so I'm really nervous about how this is going to turn out. I must admit that the graphics look quite incredible so hopefully they're able to convey the feeling from the book pretty well also...

Butterfield should be good in this but I haven't liked anything Ford or Kingsley have been in in years and I don't like Breslin.

I literally pissed myself laughing when they showed Ben Kingsley with that ridiculous face paint. Also, looks like another phoned-in performance from Harrison Ford.

...they're traditional Maori facial tattoos; Pretty appropriate for a half-Maori character.
Andrew Ferguson on May 7, 2013

Then they should've hired a Maori actor as opposed to an Indian Jew mix.

Why? Since when has the ethnicity ever mattered for playing a particular character? That's what acting is all about. Did you not buy Sean Connery as a Russian submarine captain even though he's Scottish with a markedly distinct Scottish accent?

you're an idiot... that's as far as I'll go for now. So if a movie has an alien in it do you go to Rigel9 for casting??

They banned religion and worked to suppress culture long ago in Ender's world. I never got the impression that Mazer had face tats from the book. I would have preferred for the movie to not have face tats. In fact, Ender's description: He looked to be about sixty, by far the oldest man Ender had seen on Eros. He had a day's growth of white whiskers that grizzled his face only slightly less than his close-cut hair. His face sagged a little andhis eyes were surrounded by creases and lines. He looked at Ender with an expression that bespoke only apathy.

Ender's game with out kids would be like Top Gun with out planes. I've learned not to expect a lot from movies made from favorite books., but I will go see this one, love Harrison Ford. I just hope they don't screw it up as bad as the trailer suggest.

I love the book, I really do. I was excited to hear a movie version being made, I really was. That said, this trailer does nothing for me. I agree with CoolwhipSpecial about Harrison Ford phoning it in. That said, I'll give it a chance but I don't expect greatness unfortunately, I really don't.

I was hoping for a more cerebral film about Ender. This looks big and flashy
Jesse on May 7, 2013
48
It might be that it's the first trailer trying to pull attention of a crowd that doesn't really know the story and who's attention can be grabbed by big and flashy things. So hopefully there's more substance but just not shown in this. One can hope because I agree with you.
Neuromancer on May 7, 2013
50
People don't seem to understand trailers. The whole purpose of a trailer is to show flashiness. I would have liked to see a little more in depth characters too but it may be a good idea to make it flashy since cerebral doesn't sell great. Look at the Avengers, that was nothing but a flashiness fest.
g1i1ch on May 7, 2013
51
I get ya, and I will await final judgment until further trailers. I also will probably see it because I like to see as much as I can. At the same time I do get a since they went more for blockbuster, which I like plenty of, and for this will hold out hope it is more than that.
Jesse on May 7, 2013
52
Trailers give a taste of the movie. This is going to end up being a big, flashy movie not a violent, cerebral film about the ethics of war. From the trailer we can easily see what this movie is going to be about. The trailers for Drive showed a lot of violence and were exciting but anyone that loves movies could tell that it was a tense, violent drama not an action film. Anyone that's loved movies and trailers for a long time can easily see what Ender is going to end up being and its not the adaption me and Jesse were craving.

What do we care about all the actors names in it ..... I was hoping for more drama about the good stuff from the book...this looks like a big hollywood flop.

Kids are all too old,Ender is supposed to be 6-8...and they Show him firing on the Bug's planet...giving away the ending. That will make it easier to ignore on account of Card's anti gay philosophy...Which kind of shits all over Ender's underdog appeal.

Dominic on May 8, 2013
58
I've already read the books. Its just a prick move to not put a spoiler warning. Just because its expected that there is gonna be somebody talking spoilers doesn't mean everybody should stop doing the courteous thing. By that logic the only people allowed to talk about Game of Thrones on the internet are the people that read the books already and the only people allowed to talk about movies are people that have seen every spoilery set photo.

Chris on May 7, 2013
60
So much for a cerebral, violent, contemplative movie on the military and ethics during wartime. Looks like another typical "exciting", hollywood CGI-fest. I wanted to see an old scool, serious hard sci-fi film like Alien, Blade Runner, Moon but this will turn out more like Star Trek 2 and the Hunger Games. I hope its actually a good movie, lord knows they have an amazing story on their hands, personally I'll be able to separate the movie/book but its disappointing this is the approach they took (hollywood blockbuster over sci-fi classic).
si1ver on May 7, 2013
61
I hoped against hope they would be able to pull it off but looking at the credits I should have known: Kurtzman/Orci and Summit/Lionsgate. Summit and Lionsgate couldn't even address the serious themes in the Hunger Games.
si1ver on May 7, 2013
62
Did you honestly think a story like that could be done without CG?
Guest on May 8, 2013
63
Nope but this is clearly a blockbuster (CGI-fest) instead of a serious sci-fi movie. . Even though they're both sci-fi films with fantastic special effects, there's a big difference between 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Trek 2, and its apparent this will be more like the latter.
si1ver on May 8, 2013

All the pre talk on here had got me excited but I do hope it's a little more than sci fi fodder for the Twilight / Hunger Games crowd.

LBR on May 7, 2013

if you've read the books then you understand that the story is a morality play that could be contemporary.. but going in you also know that the filmmakers would have to alter some things or they would never be allowed to release it to the general public; they would have been charged with child pornography and child exploitation . but I am hoping that the gist of the story will survive the alterations. it is truly a thought-provoking series of books that Card wrote since he is very adept at playing the Devil's Advocate not only in this series but in his other series' as well.

Fell in love with the book because the writing lets us into Ender's head. His motivations. Can't do that in a movie very well without a narrator, which I had hoped would be an older woman playing future Valentine, telling the audience the story of how her brother saved the world from her retrospective, long after the events had passed.

Damn. This wasn't on my radar at all, but I'm interested now. Great cast!

This looks like shit. Enders Game is supposed to be a psychological thriller with the focus on Enders mind and his struggle at the battle school. Not Mazer (Kingsley), Not Grant (Ford), Not flashy space battles, no fucking CGI. If you make CGI make it about the fantasy computer game he plays. I really hope this trailer is just showing the little flashy CGI bullshit there is to attract the audience and not what the movie will actually contain.
Alex on May 7, 2013
75
I don't agree that it is a psychological thriller. But now that you mention it, I feel that the movie should be more akin to "Lord of the Flies." --With emphasis on the relations and power struggles between the kids. That's what you are talking about right? But I lower my standards a bit b/c I know that a movie has to appeal to people in different ways. Loyal fans of a book are hard to please and pleasing them alone would likely alienate everyone else, because without having read the book, the rest of the audience would be like "This is weird."
USNavySquid on May 8, 2013
76
It wouldn't alienate people to make a good adaption of a story because if the story was alienating people wouldn't have liked it in the first place. A movie just needs to be well made, keep the characters the same and address the same themes that original did like Lord of the Rings, A Princess Bride, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Those movies weren't always true to the book but they still always tried to be as close to the "heart and soul" of the book as possible.

Why are people so quick to bash a film like this. I'm hopeful that we Sci Fi fans are seeing a new golden age of the genre come into being. Just sit back and enjoy that awesome special effects. Besides, Kingsley AND Ford together? I mean, Kingsley is like Anthony Hopkins or Patrick Stewart, the man could read Christmas stories and make it entertaining.

Pretty decent trailer for a sci-fi movie. But seeing so much hate around here, i now understand why there aren't many sci-fi movies done in the last decade, only horror flicks, avengers and twilight crap. No wonder a movie like the last Judge Dredd failed at the box office.
