The Empire Strikes Back

It's been a couple years since Star Wars blew audiences away in 1977, and now we're waiting for the next installment to hit theaters next summer on May 21st, 1980. We haven't heard much about the sequel, save for some crazy rumor about Darth Vader real identity, but now the first teaser trailer has arrived for the sequel which has the title The Empire Strikes Back. However, unlike most trailers that hit the big screen, this doesn't use any real footage from the sequel. Instead, it uses concept art from Ralph McQuarrie showing new planets, more droids, weird creatures and a lightsaber face-off between Luke Skywalker and the master of the dark side, Darth Vader. This is going to be so awesome! Watch it below!

Here's the first teaser trailer for Irvin Kirsher's The Empire Strikes Back, from StarWars.com:

The Empire Strikes Back is directed by Irvin Kirshner (The Flim Flam Man) and written by Leigh Brackett (The Big Sleep) and newcomer Lawrence Kasdan with a story from Star Wars director George Lucas. Plot details are scarce, but the title seems to indicate that Darth Vader and the Empire are planning to seek out the Rebel Alliance and get revenge for their devastating attack on the Death Star. As the trailer indicates, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher will be back as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo along with Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2 and Billy Dee Williams as new character Lando Calrissian.

This Lucas guy can do know wrong!

I hear it's not even Lucas directing it. It's some guy named Irving Kershner. Did you see his movie SPYS? It was terrible. This guy is going to ruin Star Wars!

Cool, can't wait. Wonder if Luke and Princess Leia get married in it...

They would make such a cute couple!

Nice set up, making this sound like it's new.

Guys this may sound crazy...but I bet Vader is Luke's father. Crazy I know...but I get this nagging feeling.

That's crazy talk. How can he be his father if Darth Vader betrayed and murdered him!? You're out of your mind. That'd make no sense. You'd have to look at it from a completely different point of view.

I think you're reaching a bit there dude...

14

Really? Is it that far fetched?

Xerxexx on Oct 17, 2013

15

I don't know, I guess it just seems a little predictable. I'm hoping they throw in some sexual tension between Luke and Leia, they'd be a great couple!

axalon on Oct 17, 2013

I don't know. The first one was great. I can't see this one topping it.

I would watch the fuck out of any movie trailer that contained no footage but concept art from Ralph McQuarrie instead.

I...I know it sounds crazy...but imagine if it were true! What a twist that would be.

What?! Luke and Leia together? No, that's too obvious. She's best made for Han Solo. THAT could be interesting. The princess and the smugler.

Did "Star Wars" really need a sequel? This is just Lucas trying to get more money. Honestly, this seems more like a business move than an artistic one. No wonder he isn't even directing it himself. Who is this Irvin guy anyway? I know it's too early to say, but I'd much rather see the story of how Darth Vader got into the Dark Side. That'd be an awesome film! Also, I'm tired of this political correctness stuff. Who's the black dude at the end?

Krishna Shenoi on Oct 17, 2013

Landau(?) Calrissian???

Who directed that trailer, Ken Burns?

Star Wars was great but I don't know about this... Maybe I'll rent the beta.

Ya know, I truly don't know why everybody is going so ape shit over this movie. The first one was okay and had some decent effects, but the story was all over the place. For my money, there will be only one movie that will not only be the biggest hit of 1980, but one of the greatest films of the 80s (quite possibly of all time). And that movie is...POPEYE!!!! YEAH BABY!!! Robin Williams as the one-eyed sailor!!! NO CONTEST!!! The Empire may strike back, but not as hard as POPEYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Von Ryan on Oct 17, 2013

i'll go ya one better than Vader being Luke's father... I bet Leah is his SISTER!!!! whatcha think about THAT?!?!?!?!?!
