'Portal' Short Film Director Dan Trachtenberg to Helm 'Y: The Last Man'

Y: The Last Man

Back in August of 2011, we featured an incredible short film called Portal: No Escape, a trailer for a movie that didn't really exist, inspired by the video game Portal. On its own, the project was more than impressive, and now director Dan Trachtenberg (who is one of the hosts of Totally Rad Show) is turning that success into a bigger career. Deadline has word that Trachtenberg has been hired to direct the long gestating adaptation of the graphic novel Y: The Last Man, which once had directors like D.J. Caruso and Louis Leterrier involved. Last fall we heard New Line Cinema was making the project a priority and here we go.

For those who are unfamiliar with the comic book, it takes place after a mysterious plague kills nearly all the world's male mammals overnight. The story follows a magician named Yorick who's the only male survivor and his male pet monkey named Ampersand that set out to find what may have wiped out the male chromosomes. The comic was first published by Vertigo in 2002 and currently has around 60 issues which were repackaged in a single book. If Portal: No Escape is any indicator, Trachtenberg has immense respect for existing properties and knows how to handle sci-fi. This could be the start of a very lucrative career.

"currently has around 60 issues" it's exactly 60 and it's over. Besides that, amazing news. Hope they don't just make one movie.

I hope they don't F*** this up like AMC has the Walking Dead.

Y: The Last Man was an atrocious series...misandristic's not surprising you liked that if you think AMC's series is a "F*** up"

I do enjoy parts of the AMC show but the characters on the show do not represent the characters in the book. They made Andrea one of the most annoying characters on television and everything that made the Governor a compelling bad guy has been stripped away. There is more tension in the 20 or so pages of the book than in an hr episode of the show where most of the peoples motivations make no sense. They have characters dig graves for Lori and Carol but there are no bodies and they just fill up the graves. You dont have to like Y the Last Man, I wasnt completely satisfied with the way it concluded but I dont see where its man hating. Yorick is an idiot but he comes across as a better person than 95% of the women.

As far as I remember that portal short was awful. It was like he never played the game at all. I only read the first of the Y novels and that wasn't great either, every man died because they removed a talisman from Israel or something? Pass. Seems like a perfect match though

Portal: No Escape is misrepresented here. Dan T.'s writing and direction lacked the humor that made the Portal game as popular as it is. If he is taking Y in the same direction, then it may lose it's core audience.
