Reese Witherspoon Hits Space in 'Passengers' with Keanu Reeves

Just recently we learned that Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts' sci-fi romance Passengers was finally making progress towards the big screen with "Game of Thrones" director Brian Kirk on board to direct the film with Keanu Reeves still attached. The story is set in the future on a spacecraft making a centuries-long interstellar voyage to a new planet. Due to a computer glitch, a single passenger (Reeves) awakens from his cryogenic sleep 90 years before anyone else. Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he in turn, awakens another beautiful woman to spend time with him, and that woman is Reese Witherspoon.
Heat Vision has the story which says Witherspoon is in early talks, but they're expecting a deal to close. Though we were hoping for the more obvious, but still exciting prospect of Sandra Bullock joining Reeves again, this seems like a very interesting pairing. Witherspoon can be seen in Mud in limited theaters, but otherwise she hasn't been seen in a great performance since Walk the Line back in 2005. This sounds like a potentially great romance, and I'm excited to see what Spaihts writing is like without massive studio interference and rewrites from someone else. Sound good?

Reeves & Reese, this is a great pairing. I read the script a long time ago though and didn't like it much. Not really SF, not in important parts at least, an okay romance I guess.

Sounds a bit like it could be another Solaris, honestly.

Which would be a good thing, IMHO.

I've read the script and thought it was pretty fantastic. Spaihts can write. His original Alien Engineers script was brilliant and it's a crime that we'll never see it. I'm not sure about Reese though. Although Passengers is a drama/romance set in space, she makes pretty lame romance movies. I don't think she'd elevate this and the script deserves the effort. Very eager to see what happens from here.

We he wakes her, she slurs "Do you know who I am? I'm an American!"
