Reese Witherspoon Will Hire 'The Intern,' Now Starring Robert De Niro

November 7, 2013
Last year, Tina Fey was attached to The Intern, a new project from What Women Want, Something’s Gotta Give and It’s Complicated director Nancy Meyers. The film is said to follow an online fashion business thriving from success. However, things get shaken up when she's informed that the company is importing seniors to be interns as a community outreach effort, and one will be under her tutelage. No, they're not seniors in high school or even college, but rather senior citizens, geriatrics, old people. Now Deadline says Reese Witherspoon is taking the role once linked to Tina Fey, and she'll have to deal with a Raging Bull.
Out titular character is Robert De Niro as an over 70-year old widower bored with retirement, after running his own successful business, who is initially a nuisance but grows to be an invaluable part of the woman's life as they bond and develop a touching friendship. Sounds like you're typical sappy Meyers flick, but without as much romance this time. Honestly, when Fey was involved, I was a little more hopeful, but now that Witherspoon and De Niro are attached, I'm definitely back on the skeptical side. De Niro hasn't chosen comedies well, and when Witherspoon enters this genre, it's just boring. I'd like to be proven wrong.
