While Iron Man 3 is just around the corner to kick off the summer, Robert Downey Jr. is getting ready to step out of the superhero spotlight for his next project. As we heard last year, Downey is leading The Judge, a drama with some comedy thrown in from writer Bill Dubuque (an up and coming writer with projects like The Accountant and The Headhunter's Calling in development) which tells the story about a big-city lawyer (Downey) who returns home after the death of his mother to learn his estranged father, a judge, is suspected of her murder. Now THR says Robert Duvall will play the patriarch judge in the film.
In addition to discovering the truth about this case, Downey will reconnect with his family after walking out on them so many years before. The dynamic between the spunky Duvall and Downey's dry, sarcastic nature should be something to behold when this film goes in front of cameras. We're not really sure what the blend of comedy and drama is like in the film, but with David Dobkin of Wedding Crashers and Fred Claus, you'd think there'd be a decent amount. Then again, this might be the time that Dobkin chooses to change his style a bit and venture outside of comedic territory. At one time Jack Nicholson was in talks to return to the courtroom, but Warner Bros. wasn't able to finalize a deal and he passed on the project. Stay tuned.
