Rumor: Benedict Cumberbatch Has a Role in 'Star Wars: Episode VII'?

Before anyone gets carried away, keep in mind that this is a huge rumor coming from Film Chronicles, an untested source for trusted information. After playing Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness for director J.J. Abrams, it sounds like the "Sherlock" actor Benedict Cumberbatch might shack up with the filmmaker again in another sci-fi role, in another huge sci-fi franchise. Supposedly the actor is waiting in the wings for an announcement from Disney and Lucasfilm that he will have a role in Star Wars: Episode VII. Of course, since we don't know anything about the plot, we're not sure what character he would be. Read on!
Since villains have taken the form of Sith Lords, bounty hunters, corrupt politicians and more, there are a variety of choices if Abrams were to use him for a bad guy again. But maybe Abrams will pull a 180 and make Cumberbatch a hero this time. It seems kind of lazy and easy to cast Cumberbatch as the villain after Star Trek Into Darkness, but he's a spectacular actor, and we're sure his performance wouldn't be just like his turn as Khan, which was a stirring portrayal of the character, even if he wasn't written very well. His casting would make sense since the actor is no longer starring in Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak. Either way, the casting of Cumberbatch will likely create some dissension among fans and critics of J.J. Abrams, but we'll see if this turns out to be anything more than a rumor.

Its an awesome choice for any big role. He's the best actor of his generation.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was playing Darth Sidious

Sidious is dead. This is Episode seven. My prediction.... could be Grand Admiral Thrawn.

AHHH Very true sir never thought of that one, ala Dark Empire.

Holy crap. With the red eyes? Spitting image. Eh - dunno if they'll go with that canon though. They could definitely do worse though. He would also make a standard Imperial Officer's uniform look mighty snappy.

Except they have said they will not be taking material from the books.

Except that Lucas said he would not do material from the books. Kathy Kennedy and Disney are another matter, and have no such constraint.

Yeah - but he's still involved with the new films. Besides, if your correct then use of Sidious as a clone is possible making your original comment contradictory. He would make a great Thrawn though 🙂

Cumberbatch would be an excellent Thrawn. Almost the perfect casting choice.

John Noble would be a better Sith

John Noble would be an excellent choice! Fully agree good call! And JJ briefly worked with him on Fringe so it's a possibility!

We probably won't know who he's playing until we see the movie, and then we'll kick ourselves for actually thinking it could have been anyone else.

Mark Strong was born to be a Sith Lord. And more Cumberbatch is always a good thing, hero or villain.

Fingers crossed for a Rob Schneider cameo.

I have it from unconfirmed sources that he will be donning the role of a prosperous, seductive Wookiee dancer during one of the several musical numbers in the film
