Under the Skin

After debuting at the Venice Film Festival last week, the odd drama Under the Skin is coming to the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival later this month, and an odd teaser trailer has just surfaced online. Scarlett Johansson stars in the film as Laura, an alien in human form who has been sent to Earth with limited human language, but enough so that some can successfully seduce, capture and send home unsuspecting males. But her human body piques her interest, and a single act could threaten the success of her mission. The film is adapted from Michael Faber's novel of the same name, and this looks fairly strange.

The teaser for Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin, originally from The Guardian (via Film Stage):

In search of loners, Laura (Scarlett Johansson) drives around the exquisitely moody landscapes of the Scottish highlands. She’s an alien, sent from afar and equipped with enough human language and awesome seductive power to capture, destroy and presumably send home human males. And then, her curiosity about her human body and an accidental act of pity disrupt her mission. Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth) directs the film and co-wrote the script with co-writer Walter Campbell, based on Michael Faber’s novel. The film is screening on the film festival circuit now and was acquired by A24 Films in Toronto. No release date has been set yet, but we expect it to hit theaters sometime in 2014. Stay tuned for updates. Curious?

very interesting. i loved sexy beast and birth. such wonderfully shot and directed films...i expect nothing less than the best from Glazer whom obviously watches a lot of Kubrick.

Um...should someone edit this article to NOT have two drafts of the same paragraph in it? Probably!

The second paragraph in trailer posts is written so that it contains all the important information audiences will need because it will be reused when another trailer, poster, etc. is posted for any given film. If you look back at those kinds of posts for other movies, you will notice how that's always been the case. In this case, the opening paragraph contains plot information similar to the second paragraph, which uses the official synopsis instead of a writer's own words. This way, when the project is written about again, the pertinent information is still in the article without having to be repeated in the opening paragraph. But the second paragraph contains information about the director, writer and distribution.

i would disagree with you here. these two paragraphs are pretty distinctly different. There's a pretty established form to these things, as Ethan succinctly writes below.

I understand Ethan's point about using the format to write future articles; but "distinctly different"? Come on, Link: "Scarlett Johansson stars in the film as Laura, an alien in human form who has been sent to Earth with limited human language, but enough so that some can successfully seduce, capture and send home unsuspecting males" and "She’s an alien, sent from afar and equipped with enough human language and awesome seductive power to capture, destroy and presumably send home human males." "But her human body piques her interest, and a single act could threaten the success of her mission" and "And then, her curiosity about her human body and an accidental act of pity disrupt her mission." I suppose I'm being picky with an article to which I have free access, and I meant no real disrespect to Ethan, but is this not redundant?

Fantastic book... Read it years ago, yet don't recall most of the images/scenarios shown in this teaser being in the book. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Intriguing and very original teaser trailer promising at least some really great cinematography in the film. Definitely looking forward to this.
