Hilary Clinton / Scarlett Johansson

Just last month we learned The Spectacular Now and Smashed director James Ponsoldt was attached to direct Rodham, a film about politician Hillary Rodham Clinton's early years during the Watergate scandal in the 1970s. The script comes from  Young Il Kim, made the 2012 Black List and is now in development Temple Hill Entertainment. Producers intended to get an actress attached as the lead before getting support from studios and independent financiers, and now some names have surfaced for the lead including Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon and Amanda Seyfried. More below!

The synopsis from the Black List reveal for Young Il Kim's Rodham: "During the height of the Watergate scandal [in the 1970s], rising star Hillary Rodham is the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to Impeach Nixon, but she soon finds herself forced to choose between a destined path to the White House and her unresolved feelings for Bill Clinton, her former boyfriend who now teaches law in Arkansas." During this time Clinton was just 26-years-old, and any of these four actresses sound like they would be great for the lead role. Ponsoldt told The Independent (via The Playlist):

"They’re all wonderful actresses. We’re very fortunate that a lot of really great actors are interested in playing these roles. We’re in an enviable position.

Regardless of people’s political affiliation or how they feel about Hillary Clinton, you don’t find people who question the quality of her intelligence or her drive. I want a wonderful actress who could embody that.”

All four actresses have experience in biopic territory. Johansson recently came off playing Janet Leigh in Hitchcock last year while Witherspoon landed an Academy Award for playing June Carter in Walk the Line. Of course, Jessica Chastain is also coming off a real-life role with her work in Zero Dark Thirty and later this year audiences will catch a glimpse of Amanda Seyfried in Lovelace, where the plays the titular adult actress who became a victim of abuse and manipulation. For my money, I think the best choice would be Chastain, but we'll see how casting works out. What do you think?

Meh? People want to watch a movie about this old lying hag?

Put politics aside and realize that this woman's life is very interesting and historical. I wasn't a fan of Bush, but that was Oliver Stone's last decent film and Brolin performed him perfectly. This will be a great film about the struggles inherent during the women's rights era and it's role in politics during the Vietnam War.

Its hard to put politics aside if they are going to portray her as some feminist hero. Shes been a lying puppeteer since the day she got into politics and she was put there for that exact reason.

Cody W on May 27, 2013

Also pretty funny that they choose some of the hottest actresses in Hollywood to portray her.

Brian Sleider on May 27, 2013

Yeah which leads me to believe that this will be some measure of propaganda and Im not usually the one to call any political film propaganda but if this portrays her as some beautiful feminist hero who "asked the real questions" Im gonna flip.

Cody W on May 27, 2013

That all depends on who is doing the movie. Follow the producer and you'll know before release date whether or not this will portray her as a hero or a villain.

As long as Ponsoldt stays on board, I'm all in! Johansson and Chastain seem like good fits.

Give me a freaking break who gives a crap for this kind of propaganda. Best potential line of the movie: "I really hate Nixon but I love Bill more"

Renee Zellweger more or less resembles the picture of Hilary Clinton that is shown here rather than Scarlett Johansen. Seriusly, Hilary is a normal looking girl with plain jane looks unlike Scarlett who has been named the hottest this and hottest that. Place Renee's picture alongside Hilary's picture, you'll def. get the resemblance, even Michelle Williams can portray a younger Hilary. Sorry, none of the actress whose names have been attached to the film can portray Hilary without them trying too hard. Just pick an actress whose looks and fame don't overshadow the portrayal of Hilary. Jessica Chastain is a good actress but she's becoming a famous face for her fashion these days and I don't see any resemblance to Hilary. Diane Keaton can play the older Hilary and Michelle or Renee can play the younger Hilary.

Here we go with the lets do our best and get Hilary elected president by Hollywood. Give me a break. Just wait 3 years make "Obama Saves the World" staring Will Smith and Family as The Obama's.

There are other woman I would rather vote for. The whole slipped and fell and disappearing after the Benghazi scenario was just ridiculous.

I'm sure you'd be singing a different tune if it was a film about a candidate you liked?

Guess you haven't seen the Trailers for the Tatum/Fox action romp.
