Shailene Woodley Says Mary Jane is Not in 'Amazing Spider-Man 2'

June 19, 2013

Shailene Woodley

With Sony Pictures just announcing release dates for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 in 2016 and 2018 respectively, the idea of a trilogy for this superhero franchise reboot went out the window. And it sounds like those plans might have shaken up what actually happens in the forthcoming sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Though Shailene Woodley has been cast as Mary Jane Watson, and set photos showed her on set filming scenes in New York City, the actress has revealed that her scenes will end up being cut, and the staple comic love interest will not appear until the next film.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (pointed out in the actual magazine by a SuperHeroHype reader), Woodley says, "Of course I'm bummed. But I'm a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason. Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film." That still makes us wonder if the iconic plot involving Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) will make it into the second film, thus paving the way for Mary Jane to show up in the third. While we're bummed Woodley won't appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, if it makes the series work better, that's fine.

UPDATE: More information comes from THR with director Marc Webb revealing, "I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her." However, the trade also notes that, "It is likely that Woodley will not return and that the part will be recast." Honestly, I hope this has nothing to do with the fanboy outrage that Woodley was not "hot enough" to play Mary Jane Watson. Stay tuned.

Nothing against Woodley...but MJ is also supposed to be a rather curvy 'bombshell' type...not a tall, rather slender, beauty. A young, red-headed Scarlett Johansson always came to mind for me.

Come on...

Spirre on Jun 19, 2013

This is what I don't get, fanboys get a hard on over making sure each part is cast based on their look, not their acting ability.

notalent on Jun 19, 2013

Are you implying that there is no actress who may resemble MJ's typical look more who is capable of acting well enough for the part? That only someone who does NOT have the typical MJ look is capable of acting well enough? I'm far from a Spider-Man fanboy, I've never read the comics, most of my knowledge of the lore is from the cartoon I watched growing up in the 90s. I'm just giving an opinion.

Chris Groves on Jun 19, 2013

Loved the ones with Iceman and Firestar. classic 80's.

mooreworthy on Jun 19, 2013

What don't you get about it?

Bl00dwerK on Jun 20, 2013

I said the exact opposite thing for Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games. And everyone wanted Donald Glover for Spidey, but alas, who really cares.

Akirakorn on Jun 20, 2013

Well sure, I don't 'REALLY' care, but if this is the topic at can't expect only certain opinions.

Chris Groves on Jun 20, 2013

haha, well I care. I’m sure a few people wanted Donald Glover for Spidy, but I assure you not “everybody” did. Not even close, man. And you’re right, you don’t really care which is why you say stuff like that. Nothing against Glover but there was no compelling reason to make a left turn like that, unless they were doing Miles Morales. In which case Glover would have needed to pass for what? 14? As for Mary Jane, Woodley would have been great. But I guess not looking good with a winter wind blowing in your face from the vantage point of a hidden camera lens is grounds for sex starved nerds to treat her like she has a dick. Every comic babe is drawn like a bombshell. That’s really no argument against casting Woodley, who actually is a total babe. She just hasn’t been in a bunch of horrible movies. Many of us wanted Emma Stone for MJ at one point, and Woodley is curvier than her. Whatever that proves.

Bradley Paul Valentine on Jun 22, 2013

What you're missing is that MJ is not only drawn like a bombshell, she's supposed to be a supermodel and with Woodley, we'll get yet another girl-next-door a la Kirsten Dunst. Excuse us for wanting her to be accurately portrayed for once. We especially need this reboot to do at least a few things right since it strays so much from the original material and another reboot is not in the foreseeable future.

bfg666 on Jun 28, 2013

Woodley did seem like an odd choice to play Mary Jane.. Although I don't really see any other person who could play the part.. Emma Stone as a curvy red-head would be spot on (but she's already the most lovable Gwen Stacy we've ever seen) I say after they kill Gwen, Emma can come back in the movie as MJ with more meet on her and her fabulous red locks!! *sigh* I know that's a big stretch.. Is it bad that I can only see Emma Stone playing MJ??

Aquaman says, "this is Outrageous"!

mooreworthy on Jun 19, 2013

Creative decision my butt!! That is a clear result of the fanboys outrage triumphing once again. First they outraged about the costume and guess what he did?? He changed it to look exactly like the costume from the comics and I must say I'm not impressed with design since it looks like a circus outfit. He definitely need to take notes from Zack Snyder. I just feel bad for this girl cause this guy clearly has no vision at all and depends on the input of others. When I first saw her as MJ I just couldn't see her in that role at all she just looked washed out and tired like the type of girl you'd expect to see standing at the corner of a street smoking a cigarette waiting for her pimp daddy. On the plus side atleast we'll get to see the Venom we've always wanted by appearance alone that is I know the fanboys will make sure of that.

BinaryChaos on Jun 19, 2013

If Webb did what the fanboys wanted, he wouldn't have modified so many things from the original material.

bfg666 on Jun 28, 2013

Probably not her best day. But maybe they will keep her on contract for 3?

DAVIDPD on Jun 19, 2013

I would hope so. More likely is the studio going with a clean slate. Even if the nerd reaction against Woodley has nothing to do with MJ being cut, I’m sure this would be seen anyway as a good opportunity to address the matter. Especially if the character is committing to three movies. In any case, I’m mortified for Woodley. There will always be this perception in her career that she isn’t a beauty or enough of one.

Bradley Paul Valentine on Jun 22, 2013

...and they cut her out completely. Poor girl.

DAVIDPD on Jun 22, 2013

Since Raimi's MJ was one of the few things he screwed up, we were expecting an MJ who was more true to the original material this time around. It has nothing to do with Woodley's beauty in itself. She's rather cute but she clearly is no supermodel and that's what MJ is supposed to be.

bfg666 on Jun 28, 2013

Her not coming back could have more to do with being the star lead in the (potential) Divergent trilogy plus the adaptation of The Fault in Our's likely she'll be rather busy over the next few years.

Emma on Jun 19, 2013

What about Jennifer Lawrence?

jag42 on Jun 20, 2013

Sounds like she just wasnt right for the part. But that's okay, I feel like they were adding too many characters into this installment anyway. Every time that happens I feel like it runs the risk of having the Spiderman 3 effect

Danimal on Jun 20, 2013

WHAT? The press release said something about streamlining and bringing her back for #3. Whatever ends up really happening, how does that sound like she just wasn’t right for the part? Jeez. But I agree with what you said about too many characters being in the movie. And I believe that’s why Mary Jane isn’t going to be introduced. I think I read somewhere she was in just two scenes or something like that.

Bradley Paul Valentine on Jun 22, 2013

Good news.

prantsdagger on Jun 20, 2013

Allison brie for MJ!!

Micah on Jun 20, 2013

I really had no issue with her being cast as MJ. However, being a Spider-Man fan I have to say I did have an issue with MJ being introduced in the second film, especially if she was going to have a major part. That would then likely mean that Gwen wouldn't be around for much of the movie. To give Gwen's death the weight it deserves it should come at the end of the movie. That sort of means that it's a bit too early to be introducing MJ to the series. That is the only objection I had to Shailene Woodley being cast as MJ, was that they were including MJ in the film, not to her being MJ. Yes, I see the objection based on looks, but then again, almost every female character in comics is super curvy. To the point that Scarlett Johansson should be cast in every role. So, as a fan, I understand that the physical look of the character may not be captured. I'm more interested in the essence of the character's personality being captured, so that doesn't bother me. I do think though that it would be a disservice to the characters of Gwen Stacey and MJ to start trying to develop the relationship between Peter and MJ in the same movie that Gwen dies. So, in the end, I think this was the right decision.

Corlock on Jun 21, 2013

I think MJ was just gonna be introduced as a shy friend of Gwen’s, which is pretty much how it is in the Ultimate line. Tho I’ve only read starting with Miles Morales, so I may be incorrect. My point is I think they were just gonna show that MJ existed and maybe a quick spark with Peter and that’s it. I don’t think they were gonna develop a relationship with Peter yet.

Bradley Paul Valentine on Jun 22, 2013

This chick isn't Mary Jane Watson by any stretch of the imagination. None. she's hot. But that's not going to cut it. Besides, Emma doesn't want Peter kissing anyone else just yet, their headlining breakup hasn't happened yet, it's coming though, they always do. Keep watching E!

кяιgнтσи on Jun 21, 2013

I think they just wanted to show MJ exists. I don’t think it was going to be a love triangle. I think it’s silly to rally against Woodley as MJ though. But this happens all the time when actors are cast as beloved characters. Maybe keep an open mind? A lot of people could play MJ and bring their own magic to her.

Bradley Paul Valentine on Jun 22, 2013

Calling it now get back to me whether right or wrong: Gwen's going to die in 2. MJ is new love interest for 3 and 4.

Kevin Jang on Jun 25, 2013

I really don't think they portrayed any character very accurately. Whether its dunst,McGuire, Garfield or woodley only actor I really liked out of any of the movies was Dafoe. Topher grace depicted as venom was terrible all they needed was Dolph lundgren with a camera and BAM there is Eddie brock

allwrong on Jul 18, 2013

They should bring mm in the second amazing spiderman basin the comics she was best friends with Gwen and peter and mm started dating wen green goblin threw Gwen off a buliding and wen peter shot a web at her foot she got her neck broken through whiplash

Ninjo_ on Jul 20, 2013

I think they should skip Mary Jane Watson and go with Black Cat. She's one of my favorite villains/heroes. She's beautiful, intelligent and way more interesting than Mary Jane.
