The Daily Bugle 'Spider-Man' Tumblr Teases Villains with Oscorp Story
That menace who destroyed Oscorp Tower is back in the city! With Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man 2 kicking off the Summer of 2014 next May, in less than seven months, it's time to start building up marketing for the webbed menace's return. Timed, most likely, with the conclusion of New York Comic-Con this past weekend, the viral tumblr blog The Daily Bugle (like the newspaper from the comics) posted a story about "Oscorp Biz Holds Steady". The article talks about how Oscorp is recovering since Dr. Connors' "attack", which caused "Oscorp's stock [to climb] four points." Are there more clues hidden in the text somewhere?
Here's the full text of the fake "news story" as posted on The Daily Bugle tumblr (via ComicBookMovie & ComingSoon) which is worth following for future updates. What other clues are hidden in this news story?
Despite the assault on Oscorp Tower two weeks ago and the revelation that disgruntled Oscorp employee, Dr. Curt Connors, was responsible for the attack, Oscorp’s stock has climbed four points.
Oscorp spokesman Douglas Menken provided some details from the meeting, including that the construction on the prototype alternative energy power plant, complete with hydroelectric tower, is on schedule for completion within the next year.
Other highlights included a preview of a flight harness for the military and significant advancements in robotics by the head of the engineering division, Spencer Smythe.
Oscorp personnel dismissed questions regarding Norman Osborn’s health and whether the company’s estranged heir apparent, Harry Osborn, is up to the task of running his father’s conglomerate.
Menken stated, “Between the disappearance of Dr. Rajit Ratha, the rogue actions of a very unstable former employee and Norman Osborn’s health concerns, everyone in the media will cry the sky is falling, but just the opposite is true. While everyone else ducks for cover, Oscorp is always reaching for the stars.”
A couple of things to note - first, mention of an Oscorp "hydroelectric tower", which ties in with Electro as the villain in Amazing Spider-Man 2. There's also "a flight harness" being developed by "the head of the engineering division, Spencer Smythe." Smythe is actually a villain from the comic book universe. He is "a robotic and arachnid expert who asked J. Jonah Jameson to fund his projects" leading to the creation of the Spider-Slayers. There's also the other key names - Norman Osborn and his son Harry Osborn, being played by Dane DeHaan. As for Norman, well, he's still sick at the moment: "Norman Osborn's health concerns." To top it off, Dr. Rajit Ratha is mentioned, and he later becomes the villain Protogoblin. His death scene was cut from the first Amazing Spider-Man, though prominent actor Irrfan Khan plays Ratha in the movie.
What is this all hinting at? The Sinister Six, as they've already teased once before. This one story alone seems to tease Hydro, Vulture, Protogoblin and the Spider-Slayers at least. Quite a big update for one story, but we'll have to keep an eye out for any other teases that come from The Daily Bugle. Until then, follow the Tumblr blog here and stay tuned for more interesting Spidey viral updates. Thoughts on all these villains?
