After being at the helm of the awards contender and real-life drama The Impossible, director Juan Antonio Bayona is heading into science fiction territory with a new project at Warner Bros. Variety has word that Bayona has joined an untitled sci-fi film written by Forrest Gump and Munich screenwriter Eric Roth. Unfortunately, details on the story have yet to be revealed, but with a skilled writer like Roth penning the script and Bayona taking this as only his third directing gig (following The Impossible and the Guillermo del Toro produced horror film The Orphanage), there's the potential for something great here. More below!

Roth most recently wrote Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and has also written The Insider, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Ali. The writer is also behind the gestating tale of Cleopatra which has Ang Lee circling the project with Angelina Jolie in the lead. Warner Bros. has some great sci-fi on the way with Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity coming in October, The Wachowskis' Jupiter Ascending and most likely Christopher Nolan's Interstellar and it sounds like this new project will keep the genre alive at the studio. Hopefully we'll hear more details on the project soon.

Exoect overdramatic acting and lots of crocodile tears, Im sorry but The impossible has got to be the most overrated borefest Ive watched all year and this is coming from a guy whose favorite movie from this year is technically a romcom.
