Universal Sending 'The Purge' Sequel to Theaters in Summer of 2014

November 20, 2013

The Purge

Earlier this month, we learned that James DeMonaco was returning to write and direct a sequel to The Purge, this year's high concept horror thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. Produced by Paranormal Activity and Insidious franchise's Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Production banner on a budget of $3 million, the film went on to make nearly $90 million. Now Universal has announced that The Purge 2, which is just beginning production next month, has a release date of June 20th, 2014. That's a quick turnaround, but the first film was cheap, so it doesn't require a long post-production period. Read on!

As of now, we don't know if the film will have a different title, but when DeMonaco was revealed to return to the film, Bloody Disgusting pointed out something interesting before news of the director's return was confirmed. They note that Production Weekly tweeted that a film called The Zone was going to start shooting in Los Angeles in December. Coincidentally, the film is being produced by Jason Blum and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production banner and will be distributed by Universal with DeMonaco writing and directing. We still don't know if The Zone is The Purge 2, but expect to hear more very soon.

Are you kidding me, they plan on shooting out a sequel in less than 7 months plus marketing? Along with the new Transformers movie coming out a week after the planned release date....okay.

Hopefully a rushed shoot will actually help it. There's no reason a Purge movie needs typical blockbuster production time.

I'm down. The first one was fun, and lots of potential for a sequel/prequal

See I'm actually pumped about this now. First one had a great idea but just poorly executed....home invasion style really?? Come on writers.
