Universal Wants Damon & Greengrass Back for More Jason Bourne?

Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass

At the beginning of the month, we learned that Universal Pictures had hired Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes, Invictus) to script a sequel to The Bourne Legacy, the follow-up that takes place in the universe of The Bourne Identity franchise. It was assumed that the sequel would just follow Jeremy Renner as the Operation Outcome agent Aaron Cross who was targeted for termination. Now Twitch has word that Universal is keen on bringing Matt Damon as Jason Bourne into the expanded universe, which is what producer Frank Marshall already wanted to do last summer. But that's not all Universal wants. Read on!

In addition, the rumor is that they also want to bring back The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass for the gestating sequel. In fact, the only way that Damon will get involved is if Greengrass came into the mix. We're not sure if The Bourne Legacy sequel is the film in question or if this would be a separate Jason Bourne sequel with the potential to cross over.

The problem is Damon and Greengrass tried to crack a fourth film in the series, and they couldn't come up with anything they felt confident in making. Plus, Damon said that he was skeptical about bringing Bourne back into the mix. Of course, a good script and the right paycheck might change their tune. This is all just a rumor right now, but having Renner and Damon in one Bourne movie sounds fun, even if it's not for another few years, so hopefully this works.

UPDATE: Variety reports that Universal is saying there's not truth to this rumor at this time, but it seems like this kind of effort to bring Jason Bourne back is inevitable. Anyway, stay tuned for anymore updates.

Agreed. I just recently re-watched the Bourne Trilogy (backwards), and they are perfect as they are. Don't ruin a good thing.

I'd love to see Damon and Greengrass get back together! For a completely new, wholly original film that's not a sequel, adaptation, or reboot! It's getting old.

Of course, with Despicable Me 2 becoming Universal's 2nd biggest film of all time, Furious 6 becoming I think their 4th highest grossing film of all time, and even Jurassic Park passing the $1 Billion threshold thanks to it's 3D re-release...they are officially 'big time' in a way that they have not been for years. It's no shock that they want to stay in the 'big event film' business. That's why they set up a 5 year deal with Legendary Pictures, continue to work with Illumination, are keeping the Fast and Furious films bigger and better than the last, and seem to be trying to develop strong relationships with talent. After Ted was huge, they stayed in the Seth MacFarlane business and are making his next film. After the Fast and Furious films were big, they stayed in the Vin Diesel business and are releasing Riddick, and they have Justin Lin lined up to make something for them. They seem to want to get Greengrass and Damon back on board for the Bourne series. They are bringing Jurassic Park back with a talented young up and comer. Universal is definitely 'back' as one of the top tier studios.
