Spider-Man at Comic-Con

"Dead or alive, you're coming with me." We just finished the big Sony Hall H panel at Comic-Con 2013, which included major presentations for a few of their big upcoming projects. First, they showed us footage from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, which looks as fun as the first one. But the biggest reveals included our first look at any footage from Jose Padilha's RoboCop remake with Joel Kinnaman, and Marc Webb's sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spidey. While we still have another day of Hall H panels, the Spider-Man 2 footage is the best Hall H footage I've seen so far.

Immediately following the Hall H presentation, which we live blogged in full here, Ethan Anderton and I recorded a video blog talking about our thoughts on the footage from these three movies. Watch our video:

Seeing the footage from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which was completely raw and unfinished (including even a few storyboards and pre-vis) but still exciting to see, reminded me of the very first year I came to Comic-Con just to see Spidey footage. At the time it was for Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and I was excited, but we all know how that turned out. That said, my exhilaration this time here reminds me of that day because I think they're on the right track. I was much more hesitant about Lizard and the footage from the original Amazing Spider-Man when I saw that in 2011, but I believe they're putting the right care and concern into crafting Electro, and Spidey needs that kind of challenge. His origin has been retold, now time to go all out.

As for RoboCop, I infamously called out the movie as a flop last year but have been waiting to see some actual footage. Surprisingly, it looked better than I thought it would, but I'm still not convinced. I just hope we're not being sold by the spectacle and cool sci-fi world and relevancy to today in order to cover up a disaster. Then again, that can be said for both movies, but I'm still excited. I want both of them to turn out fantastic, but I'm putting my bet on Amazing Spider-Man 2 after today's show. More from Comic-Con soon.

If he is handled the way they saw him, then it's already too late for Rhino.

Why would you call something out as a failure a year ago? At that point this movie was in the early set construction stages. It makes no sense. The cast is great and director is intelligent and has 2 solid movies under his belt. It's the overwhelming desire for negativity that will hurt this movie. I love the original, but really look forward to this movie and seeing what Padilha can do. It's been 27 years, 2 awful sequels, a bad TV show, a brief appearance in pro wrestling and Japanese commercials since the glory days of Robocop.
