Vin Diesel / Groot

Although Marvel hasn't confirmed the news that Vin Diesel will be providing the voice of the tree alien Groot in their cosmic superhero ensemble Guardians of the Galaxy, the actor's interviews and more following his big hint on Facebook with a picture of the comic book character pretty much makes it official. And if that wasn't enough, here's some more goodness. When asked at a press junket for Riddick (via ComingSoon), if Diesel would just be providing the voice for Groot, the actor revealed, "It'll be voiceover, mo-cap and all of that stuff. It's going to be super cool." However, the deal isn't finalized just yet. Read on!

Here's what Diesel had to say about his meeting with Marvel from THR:

"What can I say about Groot? I can say something about Marvel. I take my hat off to them for being so creative and thinking outside of the box. [The focus of our initial conversation was] a fresh IP that would come out in 2016 or 2017, and potentially launch the third phase."

However, Diesel's appearance at Comic-Con, and the response his fans had to potentially working with Marvel made him and the studio want to do something more immediate. But the actor recalls:

"With my schedule, it was almost impossible to imagine I could do anything immediate. I guess after they watched 'Iron Giant,' or whatever, they came up with this idea of taking the strangest Marvel character -- or the strangest Marvel character that's ever hit film -- and thought what I could do with that with motion capture and with my voice. Now it's just up to my reps to allow that to happen."

It sounds like everything should go well with the deal since both Diesel and Marvel are very keen on working with each other, and we're glad to have the actor board a film bringing him closer to The Avengers. However, we're wondering just what intellectual property were he and Marvel considering for Phase Three. Is there a chance he could still take on that character while providing the voice and motion capture for Groot? It's probably pretty unlikely. Though actors like Ryan Reynolds and Chris Evans have played multiple comic book heroes, they've never inhabited the same universe like this, and that might not be what Marvel wants to do. Anyway, we can't wait for Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014.

This is not really that surprising. I just assumed he would do this when he was announced as the voice. They wouldn't shell out the cash for him to repeatedly say 3 words.

I think it would be great if he ended up playing Groot AND another character. I mean, John Rhys-Davies played Gimli and voiced Treebeard in Lord of the Rings. Groot is treebeard-esque, so why not throw Diesel in another role? I'm sure there will be plenty of voice manipulation done for Diesel's voice, and that he'd pretty easily be able to play another role. I'd be all for it.

I'm really hoping GOTG do end up teaming with The Avengers. It sounds inevitable but there still hasn't been any confirmation. I wonder if Deisel will also use his normal voice or alter it a little for Groot....?
