Go big or go extinct! For those who weren't lucky enough to attend either WonderCon or CinemaCon this year, Warner Bros has decided to unleash the sizzle reel of footage from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim seen at both of those Cons to the general public. A lot of the footage we've seen in trailers before, a lot we haven't, but this also gives us the insanely awesome shot of a Jaeger hitting a Kaiju with a freakin' boat. Charlie Day makes an appearance along with Idris Elba and Ron Perlman, plus the two leads Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi. This looks so so so awesome, it's going to be a hell of a summer of movies!
Here's the WonderCon/CinemaCon footage for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, uploaded to YouTube:
Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) is directing Pacific Rim from a script by Travis Beacham. The film follows a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi), who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger, a massive robot designed to fight legions of monstrous creatures known as Kaiju, which started rising from the sea years ago. They stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse. The film also stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day and Clifton Collins Jr. Warner Bros will release Pacific Rim in theaters in 3D on July 12th. See the full trailer.

Dude are you crazy.....that robot just used an oil tanker as a weapon, what more do you need here? This isnt an educational film or some social commentary, this looks like good old fashioned eye candy

This looks spectacular. It looks like it has the largest scale of anything opening this summer, and visually it looks very vibrant and unique.

This looks terrible. The robots look bad. The scale of the metal texture isn't right. Looks like cheap miniatures. The colors are atrocious. And I hate the token Asian female with white boy crap.

Bay`s movies actually seems high brow compared to this trailer, Bay sure needs to dumb his movies down to get to this level 🙂

For as long as transformers 2 exists your comment will never have any bearing.

Wow. Whatever it is you're smoking, you need to get that over to North Korea and get them so high they stop being able to think straight too.

I'm trying to form coherent words to convey my excitement. It's not working.

I am sure the plot will be awefull I hope they only spend like 10 min on plot then 110 min of robots fighting monsters. I would like to understand why the robot requires 2 pilots doing synchronized dancing to work.
Brian Sleider on Apr 29, 2013

It requires two pilots because it is controlled through a neural link tot he pilots. The Jaeger is such a huge piece of machinery that the neural pulse would be too much for a single person to handle efficiently, so two pilots are used to split the strain. Trailers for blockbusters aren't meant to show off exposition and character development.
Chris Groves on Apr 29, 2013

Yeh that only leads me more down the "shitty plot" road. So we will have unnecessary strife between those 2 pilots, weren't they male and female? So worthless sexual tension I'm sure. Hope I am wrong but doubt I will be.

Well, I'm sure it'll hit a lot of usual notes, but in a different way. These people likely won't do the 'oh, I hate you, you are hard to work with, wait, now we work better together, and I love you'. The two pilots of a Jeager 'mind-meld' and so they get to TRULY know each other on a rather deep level very quickly(they experience each other's memories and can immediately understand deep seeded motivations that you would never discover just by knowing someone) and the idea of a deep understanding and a romantic relationship budding from that actually makes sense. Imagine bypassing all of the typical BS interplay...and being able to know someone, their true self, almost immediately through this method of co-piloting(there is a reason many of the pilots are siblings, and I believe one is a husband-wife combo and another is a father-son) and connecting with someone(or not) on a much deeper level than otherwise possible.

You say all that, yet my spidy sense still tells me to beware the "I love you, I hate you now, I LOVE YOU AGAIN WE ROCK" typical arc for romance. No one want to watch this movie for plot. And if some one does..I do not even know. Really they could do a text roll of " why the aliens are there and what the robots are and go full action from there. I fear what could be a top notch popcorn flick will end up taking it self too seriously and sucking up 45 min of screen time that could be more robot and monsters fighting. AGAIN I hope I am wrong.

Do you know of Del Toro's resume? He may not ALWAYS make films that are quite as great at Pan's Labyrinth...but I would say that he pretty much never forgets about character or story. He never seems to handle characters in a terrible way. I don't believe we have to worry about a lack of action in this film...the 'Battle for Hong Kong' alone takes up nearly 2 reels according to Del Toro, that translates to roughly nearly 20 minutes of screen time.

Hellboy 2 in the making =/ my expectations have plummeted. I call a flop coming.

Last I heard Americans are able to express their opinions freely. I don't see why you are uptight about this. If you love the movie then good. Im sure there is someone out there who disagreed with a movie you probably loved. I guess next time I hear of the last name Groves, I see that family name as hot tempered and in need of anger management pills. Just sayin..... seesh!!

After seeing Oblivion, all of this night stuff seems like a cheap dodge. I know it;s cut fast, but I really couldn't get a sense of what anything looked like. The framing is all so tight it just looks like pieces of stuff. My kids will like it.
