"We are the greatest lawmen that ever lived and died." It's Men in Black meets Ghostbusters with a little bit of Jeff Bridges from True Grit thrown in for good measure. While the long wait for a trailer for R.I.P.D. had us worried, this actually looks pretty damn fun. The special effects look solid, the monstrous dead that Ryan Reynolds must pursue look really cool, and the chemistry between our two heroes seems pretty great. There's no sign of the plot where Reynolds is looking for the man responsible for his death, but that will likely come later. In the meantime, we're certainly interested to see how this flick turns out. Watch!
Here's the first official trailer for Robert Schwentke's R.I.P.D., direct from YouTube:
Robert Schwentke (RED) directs R.I.P.D., written by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (Clash of the Titans, Aeon Flux) and based on Peter M. Lenkov's graphic novel of the same name. Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) was gunned down in the line of duty at the height of his personal and professional life. Now he's traded 100 years of service to R.I.P.D. (Rest in Peace Department) in exchange for a shot at solving his own murder. Unfortunately, his search will take him to Hell and back with the grizzled Roy Pulsipher (Jeff Bridges) at his side. Kevin Bacon and Mary-Louise Parker also star in the Universal Pictures film arriving on July 19th.

It looks like it'll have it's moments...but it's not worth a trip to the theater.

Besides the fact that movies nowadays cost an arm and a leg to attend, why would this movie not be worthy of seeing on the big screen? If you saw any of the MIB's and are planning on see After Earth, Hangover III, Fast 6, or even 300 and Lone Ranger in theaters, what makes this movie unworthy, just out of curiosity?

Well, I saw the first two MIB, as a kid, I didn't see the 3rd. I'm not planning to see After Earth in theaters. I enjoy comedies more at home, so like the first two, Hangover 3 will probably be a DVD view for me. Fast 6 looks fantastic, so I'll definitely catch it in theaters. I'm not very interested in seeing The Lone Ranger in theaters, and 300 at this point is a maybe at best. To be honest, this just doesn't look like it's a 'must-see' movie. Is it really that hard to grasp? I go see movies that I believe look great, that are truly worth every penny spent seeing them in a great theater setting. As you said, it isn't the cheapest thing in the world, so you have to pick and choose what you see. The ONE movie that I classify as a 'must-see' in July is Pacific Rim. Spectacle doesn't come at a more grand scale than that film. The #2 after that is The Wolverine. Then, if I make more than 2 trips to the theater, it'll be stuff like Lone Ranger, this, and The Conjuring that get consideration. July isn't particularly loaded this year, Pacific Rim stands head and shoulders above the rest. May has no less than 3 must-see films with Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Fast and Furious 6. June has only one film I personally consider a must-see in the theater, and that's Man of Steel. This doesn't look bad, but it simply doesn't seem of a quality where I'll regret not seeing it in a theater. It's middle of the pack material, to be honest. It seems a little silly, it's going for an obvious action-comedy route...which is fine, but not my favorite genre. Also to be honest, the voice and overall characterization of Bridges isn't something I'm in love with, and I'm a big fan of the guy in general.

You should see the third Men In Black. Not for how good the film is or because it interests you, but because it makes MIB1 and MIB2 mean so much more. You have no idea.

I've heard very good things, and it's on my rather extensive list of films I need to see.

Good to know. I understand where you're coming from on your ranking of must see movies. I, personally, go and see movies that definitely catch my taste, or even slightly turn my head. As much as I hate paying $10+ a ticket, I rarely spend my money on anything else that's not a necessity. And I agree, there are some movies that are a must see IN the theaters, like Pacific Rim, Star Trek and (IM3 and Man of Steel). Everything else just fits in movie genres I like. Hopefully the follow up trailer to this will have a better execution to the story's plot, but for now, I could see myself seeing it. Glad we could have a simple, non argumental chat.

Oh no problem, and if I came off as a bit overly negative I wasn't really intending to. Some people say 'it's not worth a trip to the theater' and mean it in a way that's really trying to insult the quality of the film...but this does look like it would have more fun and entertaining moments than bad. I'm sure when I get around to seeing I could very well like more than I hate, and I'm not going to avoid watching it. It's just if it comes down to picking and choosing which films I'll be seeing in a theater, I have to say this will be one of the first films on the chopping block in THAT regard.

MiB 3 surprised me in that it was actually a pretty damn good movie. Better than the second in my opinion. I would recommend renting it.

The comparisons to MIB are probably going to be endless. Mindless summer fun. I like the combo of Reynolds and Bridges though. Could be comedy gold.
