Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Trailer

"You're not just an analyst anymore - you're operational now." As promised, and despite the passing away of author Tom Clancy earlier this week, Paramount has debuted the first full-length trailer for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, directed by Kenneth Branagh, with Chris Pine as the new Jack Ryan. This action-packed trailer peels back many layers of the story, including giving us a look at how Keira Knightley as Cathy Ryan gets involved. We also get to see Kevin Costner as William Harper and Branagh as the Russian villain who doesn't play nice. There are a few cheesy moments in this trailer, but it doesn't look that bad.

Here's the first full trailer for Kenneth Branagh's Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, originally from Yahoo:

Kenneth Branagh directs Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit with a script written by Steven Zaillian, Anthony Peckham, Adam Cozad and David Koepp. The film isn't adapted from a particular Tom Clancy novel, and essentially exists as an original story following Jack Ryan (from films like Patriot Games, The Hunt for Red October and The Sum of All Fears) before he joined the CIA. Branagh is also playing the villain with Keira Knightley as the love interest, Kevin Costner as Ryan's mentor and Colm Feore in a supporting role, too. Paramount Pictures sends Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit to theaters everywhere December 25th coming up.

Yeah Boy! A franchise is reborn!

DAVIDPD on Oct 3, 2013

I prefer "The Hunt for Red October" and "Patriot Games" J.Ryan better than what this appears to be. They turned the reluctant analyst put in a hard place into a standard big budget action hero. Looks like a Redbox for me.

Brian Sleider on Oct 3, 2013

"annalist" LOL. // Sorry Brian, but this one was golden. *Analyst*

DAVIDPD on Oct 3, 2013

Blame firefoxes spell check lol. Apparently an annalist is a person who writes Annals.

Brian Sleider on Oct 3, 2013

Because what you prefer is all that should be considered when adapting an existing IP for film...

Bl00dwerK on Oct 4, 2013

Rofl, no the existing source material should be considered. Nice try though.

Brian Sleider on Oct 4, 2013

I bet they considered the source material more than you considered your smart-ass comment before you posted it...

Bl00dwerK on Oct 4, 2013

Have you even read a J. Ryan book? If not you should pipe down, I have and there is little resembling J. Ryan in that trailer. But keep coming with your lil quips I find your attempts to be clever amusing. Its the internet try not to get all wound up when some one bashes one of your comments.

Brian Sleider on Oct 4, 2013

If you don't like my "clever amusing" quips choose your internet targets better. I'm out of your range...

Bl00dwerK on Oct 4, 2013

Keep at it slugger, I'm really busted up over here. Also I asked that you keep you lil quips coming. What about that imply's I do not like them? Each time you try you look more pathetic. I will also assume that you have not read a Ryan book so what do you know about the source material?

Brian Sleider on Oct 4, 2013

For all we know the big budget action stuff is a small part of the movie. If they took Patriot Games and made a trailer out of it today they would likely fill it with every second of action they could. You can't judge a movie on how things are promoted these days. Look at Edge of Darkness

ColinH on Oct 4, 2013

I could be wrong, but I doubt it. Bookmark this and shove it in my face if I am. I would bet a years worth of movie tix it will be exactly what that trailer shows. Standard blockbuster action fair. Hunt had some action but not all that much, it was mostly tense sub combat, which was slow but nail biting. Games Had the action that started the whole thing then the last bit at the end, which wasn't all that much. Clear and Present, had the most but it wasn't Ryan in the shit till the end, and when he was in the action his lack of training showed. Do you think they will show this Ryan to be some what unskilled in combat? Or do you think they will give him the Bourne treatment?

Brian Sleider on Oct 4, 2013

It will probably be some where in between. He may have basic combat skills. The desk job line in the trailer gives me a lot of hope that they'll stick to the traditional Ryan character

ColinH on Oct 4, 2013

Fingers crossed.

Brian Sleider on Oct 4, 2013

I like it. Will see. Loved the tone of the trailer and the music used.

Xerxexx on Oct 3, 2013

What about the Star Trek Into Darkness font?

Blah on Oct 3, 2013

Keira without her accent? "What the hell is going on here??"

Jon Odishaw on Oct 3, 2013

Just wait until she uses her Russian accent in the movie.

Nick Henderson on Oct 3, 2013

I hope Mister Clancy had a chance to see this trailer before his recent passing.

superultraboy on Oct 3, 2013

Looks awesome! Can't wait to see it...

Bl00dwerK on Oct 3, 2013

Wow he is perfect for the role of the young jack ryan! This looks like it should be an great mixing of the characters the brilliant clancy created

Chris Scott on Oct 3, 2013

I didn't know Clancy created Jason Borne.

Brian Sleider on Oct 4, 2013

I didn't know he said anything aout Jason Bourne...

Bl00dwerK on Oct 4, 2013

Just cause the action is filmed in a Bourne style doesn't make the character anything like Bourne. I saw nothing in the Ryan character in this trailer to indicate there's even the slightest similarity to Bourne. He looks uncomfortable in the action scenes just like Ryan is supposed to. Bourne also never wore a suit and said things like "I thought you hired me for a desk job"

ColinH on Oct 4, 2013

My comment was in reaction to the Bourne style action scenes the fast cuts and such. Out of place in what should be a political thriller not an action block buster.

Brian Sleider on Oct 4, 2013

Brian, have you actually read the last books, involving a younger Jack Ryan, whom essentially comes into his own as an agent? Personally I think Pine is perfect for the role of Jack Ryan and from just the little glimpse at what is to come. This is a little glimpse after all it looks like it should be incredibly solid in my personal opinion

Chris Scott on Oct 17, 2013

I agree entirely Colin you're spot on

Chris Scott on Oct 17, 2013

Ryan isn't supposed to be a Borne style character. While this looks like it should be fun, it doesn't feel like a Jack Ryan type movie.

Lin Group on Oct 3, 2013

Good. I wouldn't be half as interested if it did...

Bl00dwerK on Oct 4, 2013

Because your interest is all that should be considered when adapting an existing IP for film...................

Brian Sleider on Oct 4, 2013

Not just mine but most everybody elses, as well...

Bl00dwerK on Oct 4, 2013

I could not agree more.

Brian Sleider on Oct 4, 2013

Looks very generic. And His wife turns out to be the shadow recruit of the KGB.....

Nick Henderson on Oct 3, 2013

That or Kevin Costner does...

Bl00dwerK on Oct 4, 2013

That or he does and they triple flip that scriptoid like bacon on a grill. :-0

Carpola on Oct 4, 2013

That or..........................yeah that.

Such heroic nonsense on Oct 4, 2013

hah! true

Nick Henderson on Oct 4, 2013

Not so much wrong with the trailer; solid action, reasonable dialogue, not too much spoilers (Besides the fact that the girl indeed seems to be the traitor, or at least we are supposed to think she is.). And I liked Costners character. Nonetheless the trailer seems to show a lot of stuff we've seen before. Like the Bourneish editing of the fight-scene. And the Bourneish rooftop sequence. And the Bourneish I-must-save-the-world-so-i-must-travel-to-the-most-famous-places-in-the-world cliché. Oh, and the I-have-a-remote-controlled-bomb-and-I-push-the-button-and-dont-look-back-while-the-bomb-explodes cliché. And so on. So I guess I'd wait for its rental release and get me some popcorn and a diet-coke.

Nash on Oct 4, 2013

That hilcopter looked like a miniature when they changed camera angle right before it exploded. Not a bad trailer as a whole

Richie G on Oct 4, 2013

lol - that was indeed a horrible transition.

avconsumer2 on Oct 4, 2013

I hope this is good and they continue the series throughout his career until he becomes president. I love all the other Ryan films but I never liked how they all felt like singular stories instead of part of a series following the career of one man.

David Diaz on Oct 4, 2013

Seems like a "Hollywooded up" Jack Ryan. Like... as if the Jack Ryan in previous films was real... then they made an action movie based on him. lol - dunno if that's a good thing. (kind of like James Brolin as PeeWee Herman! "I'm a loner Dottie... a rebel.")

avconsumer2 on Oct 4, 2013

about time!

rickvanr on Oct 4, 2013

So branagh makes Thor starring kirk's dad from star trek and natalie portman, then he makes this with kirk from star trek and natalie portman's lookalike keira knightley?
