Goodfellas

No, it's not Martin Scorsese's birthday, but there just happen to be two awesome videos diving into the Italian director's life and filmography. As we eagerly await The Wolf of Wall Street (it's featured on our list of 21 Movies You Can Still Look Forward to In the Second Half of 2013), a 30-minute documentary called Getting Made: The Making of Goodfellas, which you can find on the Blu-Ray release, is now available online. In addition, for fans of the Bravo series "Inside the Actors Studio" (the only show worth a damn on that network), the entire episode featuring Scorsese under James Lipton's microscope is online as well.

Here's the doc Getting Made: The Making of Goodfellas from Bittersweet Life (via The Film Stage):

And here is director Martin Scorsese on "Inside the Actors Studio" in 2002, found via The Playlist:

The documentary takes a good behind the scenes look at Goodfellas, including that extended steadicam shot everyone always talks about and the dinner scene between Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. Meanwhile, this 2002 episode of "Inside the Actors Studio" is one of my favorites. While the series tends to focus on the acting side of filmmaking, whenever they bring in a director like Scorsese, Steven Spielberg or James Cameron, it makes for a fascinating conversation and journey into the past. It's nearly 90 minutes of Scorsese and Lipton ripping through the director's life and career as a filmmaker, and it's all so captivating.

I love these kinds of posts. And, of course, he's a supreme filmmaker.
