Today is the perfect day for a full-length look at the new Studio Ghibli movie The Wind Rises, directed by animation legend Hayao Miyazaki. As a die-hard fan of Ghibli and their work, this film in particular is one I've been following closely, mostly because it's the first Miyazaki himself directed since Ponyo in 2008. We've featured gorgeous artwork and a short teaser trailer already, but this one is the big reveal and it's stunning to see. There are no English subtitles yet, but that shouldn't matter. Just watching the phenomenal animation and intimate WWII story is enough of a joy. I'm very excited for this, as any Ghibli fan should be.
Here's the full 4-min Japanese trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, found via The Film Stage:
Studio Ghibli's next film, with the legendary Hayao Miyazaki at the helm, will be called Kaze Tachinu or The Wind Rises. It's an adaptation of Miyazaki's most recent color comic as well as a novel by Tatsuo Hori, about the man who designed the Zero Fighter airplane which was used in World War II. Hideaki Anno will voice Jiro Horikoshi. The Toho Company has the film set for release on July 20th in Japan, but we're not sure about any US plans just yet. Stay tuned. For those interested, follow the @ghibli_intl account for additional updates. In one of their recent tweets, they state: "the Studio Ghibli Int'l Team is hard at work to bring you #TheWindRises as soon as possible after the Japan opening on July 20!" It looks quite wonderful.
