Captain Phillips Trailer

"Listen up - we have been boarded by armed pirates…" Sony has debuted the first full-length UK trailer for Captain Phillips, directed by Paul Greengrass of the Bourne movies, starring Oscar winner Tom Hanks as Captain Richard Phillips, commander of the shipping vessel the MV Maersk Alabama, which was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. This is one of those trailers that looks so damn good it will give you the chills, just the setup and how it opens, telling the story while focused on Phillips. I love Greengrass' intense style anyway, but this looks like it'll be riveting from start to finish and I'm more than interested in seeing it.

Watch the first official trailer for Paul Greengrass' Captain Phillips, originally from UK's The Guardian:

Tells the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. Phillips spent three days as a hostage of the Somali pirates before being rescued by Navy SEALs in a raid. His heroic exploits landed him a book deal and it's Phillips' own memoir, A Captain's Story: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs and Dangerous Days at Sea, that was optioned by Sony. Captain Phillips is directed by Paul Greengrass, of the Bourne Trilogy, Bloody Sunday, United 93 and Green Zone previously. The screenplay was written by Billy Ray (Flightplan, Breach, State of Play). The film arrives in theaters on October 11th later this year.

Usain Bolt really lost a lot of weight for this role

This looks AMAZING

"Look at me. Look at me. I'm the captain now." Somehow I expected this to be a little cheesy for Greengrass's style, but I'm quite pleased. Not a fan of that title though...

Would you rather it be called "Somalian pirates hijacking a freighter ship movie with Tom Hanks in it directed from tat bloke who did Bourne Ultimatum?"

Tey on May 8, 2013

Why not call it Hijacked?

Tim Marshall on May 8, 2013

Cause that sounds like a cheap 90's action flick with Steven Segal 🙂

I've met Captain Phillips, he gave a talk at an alumni dinner, and he was one hell of a man, I think they could have been more creative, but the fact that he was an epic hero in the real life story, I dont hate this one

Looks very good

Damn that looks great. And we know how it ends...bonus.

Lame title.

GO PIRATES! Wait, are the pirates the bad guys?

Carpola on May 8, 2013

This looks awesome, looking forward to it.. but I hope that the portrayal of the men who took part in the operation to save this man and his crew is better than the one shown in Zero Dark Thirty. Not only did that movie suck, but the portrayal of the seals in that movie was a damn disgrace

I wasn't aware that JFK was the captain of the ship.

Well, hello Shirley! This looks fantastic!

Looks intense. These pirates look pretty authentic. Scary stuff. Love Paul's work so this will be good for sure....lame title or not. (Agreed, could've used something better)

Pirates of the Somalian: Revenge of Wilson

Andrew Riley on May 8, 2013

Looks great, but the title? Sounds like a Pixar movie. on May 8, 2013

Yeah, Captain Phillips, not a great title. They should have used the last part of his memoir and called the film, "Dangerous Days at Sea".

Ryan Casselman on May 8, 2013

This looks great and I know this is ripped from the headlines and all... But... There's a similar Danish production out there that looks equally intense. How do I know? Because the pull quotes tell me so!

What a horrible title...

Finally Hanks in a real movie.
