Real adventure has no limits. "This is bigger than us." One of the five Best Foreign Language Film nominees at the 85th Academy Awards this weekend is this film, an epic survival adventure called Kon-Tiki about Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdal (played by Pål Sverre Hagen) and his 4,300 mile journey across the Pacific on a wooden raft. This looks a lot better than it sounds on paper. There are some beautiful shots in this trailer alone, both on land and at sea, and I'm considerably curious to see this. You'll understand why it's an Oscar nominee by watching this trailer. And, like me, you'll probably want to see this after it's over.
Watch the official trailer for Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg's Kon-Tiki, originally from Yahoo:
The story of legendary explorer Thor Heyerdal's 4,300 miles crossing of the Pacific on a balsa wood raft in 1947, in an effort prove it was possible for South Americans to settle in Polynesia in pre-Columbian times.
Kon-Tiki is co-directed by Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg, of the films Max Manus: Man of War and Bandidas previously. The screenplay was written by Petter Skavlan. It premiered at the Toronto and Hamptons Film Festival last year. The Weinstein Company will open Kon-Tiki in limited theaters starting April 19th, but that might change if it wins at the Oscars. It should sound better than it does on paper. This is a dramatization of a documentary from 1950.

Well, this movie is just ok. It did not deserve the Academy Award nomination, forced drama and bad pacing ruin this movie.

Given it's oscar nomination I was pretty sure this was a foreign language film? Has it been dubbed for US release then?

No, I think they filmed 2 versions, 1 in Norwegian with some English and 1 in only English. So, first a take in Norwegian, then a take in English.

I don't know if the movie as a whole is any good, but I've seen the CG rendering on some of the shots where this dude is scooping great white sharks out of the ocean and they look so real it's incredible. The special effects are better than the ones in Life of Pi. But that's all I can rightly judge.

Agreed. I saw this video of the CG breakdown and now I'm on the hook to watch the whole film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixrzPTEMQm4
