Hammer of the Gods Trailer

"Dark times call for dark deeds." Magnet Releasing has debuted the trailer for Hammer of the Gods, an intense Viking drama about a son who must take an epic journey across hostile territory to find the "king who will lead us to victory." Newcomer Charlie Bewley plays the young Viking warrior Steinar, and the film is directed by Farren Blackburn, who has also been directing "Doctor Who" episodes this season. There aren't many Gods in this and there's barely a hammer in the trailer, but it does look like a gritty, grounded Viking flick about a son who must come into his own. At least this looks much better than Valhalla Rising.

Here's the first red band trailer for Farren Blackburn's Hammer of the Gods, originally from IGN:

Set in Viking Britain in 871 AD, Hammer of the Gods is a visceral, intense tale set in a world whose only language is violence. A young Viking warrior, Steinar (Charlie Bewley), is sent by his father the king on a quest to find his estranged brother, who was banished from the kingdom many years before. Steinar's epic journey across terrifyingly hostile territory allows him to emerge as the man his father wants him to be.

Hammer of the Gods is directed by Farren Blackburn, from a screenplay written by Matthew Read. Magnet Releasing will release Hammer of the Gods on VOD/iTunes on May 30th and in theaters July 5th this year.

Sorry, but Valhalla Rising it's great

MacGyver on May 6, 2013

Agreed. Valhalla Rising is an awesome movie.

Aye. Sad to hear Alex still doesn't like it, or get it

David Banner on May 7, 2013

Ouch! 🙂 I've come to love Refn, but not VR.

Alex Billington on May 7, 2013

debut? saw this trailer several weeks ago...pretty cool, though.

javier on May 6, 2013

This exact trailer - are you sure? It was just posted by IGN exclusively today, it's brand new according to Magnet. However, it may just be a US version of the old UK trailer re-released, but we haven't posted about this film before and wanted to feature this trailer anyway.

Alex Billington on May 6, 2013

Alex, do you approve all articles on prior to them getting posted? Just curious because I thought Ethan and Ben just did their own things.

Matt Peloquin on May 6, 2013

I don't approve ALL articles, but I double check most of them. Only Ethan (and I) have ability to publish, he is the managing editor, and we talk all day about the stories we're running. He makes the call some of the time, the rest of the time it's me.

Alex Billington on May 6, 2013

That's to much power in the hands of Ethan.....what if you get sick....he'd run amok with rumor articles.....doom! 🙂

David Banner on May 7, 2013

Interesting, thanks for the response!

Matt Peloquin on May 8, 2013

there was a UK trailer for this back in december of '12. - it looks pretty good...hopefully as good as the vikings on tv.

earl on May 6, 2013

not seeing enough facial hair on these "vikings"

armeetapus16 on May 6, 2013

They are teenage vikings... they have to earn the beard by surviving atrocious hormonal changes

terrible reactor on May 7, 2013

This looks bad ass!

Nielsen700 on May 6, 2013

If they don't have "The Immigrant Song" from Zeppelin in the trailer it's a wasted fuckin' opportunity. Anyone?

Dresden on May 6, 2013

hmm... sensing the use of hyperviolence to mask a poorly writ story. entirely too much of the plot was revealed in that trailer.

Zak Coleman on May 6, 2013

You can't know that until you watch it. For all we know the film shifts when Time traveling robot monkeys show up and teach everyone about Multi-level Marketing and everyone gets filthy stinking rich.

Jace on May 7, 2013

Valhalla Rising was a masterpiece this just looks like a Viking splatter movie

Loser on May 6, 2013

Did anyone else see Vikings on the History Channel? That was a good show!

mistermysteryguest on May 7, 2013

Vikings may have been entertaining but the clothing was completely inaccurate. I wish someone would make a viking-age film or series with clothing based on the actual archaeological record instead of some costume designer's fantasy.

Gudrun on May 7, 2013

Also without the disfigured and hideous stereotypical oracle/shaman/priest person with a pancake for a face and without a weirdo psycho genius with over the top acting being a weirdo who can speak to the trees or whatever Floki does.God is he annoying with his quirks ,twisting and fidgeting around. Other than that the show is entertaining.

grumble on May 7, 2013

Floki is one of the most popular characters.

mistermysteryguest on May 9, 2013

If you are talking about the History Channel's Vikings, you are out of your mind.

Robert on May 31, 2013

I want to see this now!

DAVIDPD on May 7, 2013

Better than Valhalla Rising? Dafuq?

Chazzy on May 7, 2013

This movie completely blows and is a huge waste of money. The story is weak, the acting is horrible, and nothing even remotely looks like what we know about the vikings. NOTHING. The dialog is horrible. Every other sentence has the F word. In every fight scene they grunt like a pig or growl like a dog...ridiculous. The violence for the sake of violence reminds me of a low budget 70s slasher movie. There is no redeeming character, and nothing that pays homage to Norseman culture or folklore.Don't waste your money.
