'You're Next' Duo Moves from Horror to New 'The Guest' Action Thriller

Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett

You might recognize director Adam Wingard's name from his work helming segments of horror anthologies like The ABCs of Death or VHS and S-VHS, because only a lucky few have seen his genre-busting thriller You're Next, which premiered back at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2011 (read Jeremy's review from Fantastic Fest). That movie is finally set to be released in August of 2013, but Variety reports that Wingard and writer Simon Barrett have a new film in the works called The Guest, and it takes the duo away from pure horror and into a different kind of genre than they've done before. Read on!

The Guest is being pegged as an action thriller about a soldier who is brought into the home of a fallen ally, but when dangerous secrets about his past are discovered, he becomes a threat to everyone around him. Keith Calder and Jessica Wu, who worked with Wingard and Barrett on You're Next, will produce The Guest for Snoot Entertainment (Barrett is producing as well), so all of the key behind-the-scenes players are returning. Filming is set to start in May, and hopefully we won't have to wait as long for The Guest to arrive as we do for You're Next. Lionsgate scooped up distribution rights to You're Next in the U.S., so if that performs well this summer, we should be seeing the same company make a play for The Guest soon afterwards. Thoughts?
