2013 Producers Guild's Award Nominations Include 'Gravity' & More

While 2013 may now be over, awards season is still heating up as we get closer to the big awards ceremonies. The Golden Globe telecast is just 10 days away, and the Oscar nominations will arrive on January 16th. But today we have the nominees from the Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards, a nice predecessor to the Oscars with the honor of winning being nearly the equivalent of winning Best Picture. In addition, the PGA awards usually give us a good idea of what films will likely be nominated for Best Picture when the Oscar nominations roll around, and while there aren't any real surprises as far as the nominees are concerned, there are a couple snubs that are disappointing. See the PGA film nominees below!
Here's the list of film nominees for the 2013 PGA Awards (for television nominees, see the press release):
Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award:
American Hustle - Producers: Megan Ellison, Jon Gordon, Charles Roven, Richard Suckle
Blue Jasmine - Producers: Letty Aronson, Stephen Tenenbaum
Captain Phillips - Producers: Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca, Scott Rudin
Dallas Buyers Club - Producers: Robbie Brenner, Rachel Winter
Gravity - Producers: Alfonso Cuarón, David Heyman
Her - Producers: Megan Ellison, Spike Jonze, Vincent Landay
Nebraska - Producers: Albert Berger, Ron Yerxa
Saving Mr. Banks - Producers: Ian Collie, Alison Owen, Philip Steuer
12 Years a Slave - Producers: Anthony Katagas, Jeremy Kleiner, Steve McQueen, Brad Pitt & Dede Gardner
The Wolf of Wall Street - Producers: Riza Aziz, Emma Koskoff, Joey McFarland
PGA Producer of the Year Award in Animation:
The Croods - Producers: Kristine Belson, Jane Hartwell
Despicable Me 2 - Producers: Janet Healy, Chris Meledandri
Epic - Producers: Jerry Davis, Lori Forte
Frozen - Producer: Peter Del Vecho
Monsters University - Producer: Kori Rae
PGA Producer of the Year Award in Documentaries:
A Place at the Table - Producers: Julie Goldman, Ryan Harrington, Kristi Jacobson, Lori Silverbush
Far Out Isn't Far Enough: The Tomo Ungerer Story - Producers: Brad Bernstein, Rick Cikowski
Life According to Sam - Producers: Andrea Nix Fine, Sean Fine, Miriam Weintraub
We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks - Producers: Alexis Bloom, Alex Gibney, Marc Shmuger
Which Way is the Front Line from Here? The Life and Times of Tim Hetherington - Producers: James Brabazon, Nick Quested
The biggest snub seems to be no lone for Joel & Ethan Coen and their folk music flick Inside Llewyn Davis. Their spot seems to have gone to Saving Mr. Banks, which has been buzzed about for Best Picture love, but didn't seem like a lock. This nomination certainly seems to indicate that we'll see the John Lee Hancock story from Disney's past vie for the big prize. Otherwise, we're just happy to see films like The Wolf of Wall Street, Gravity, 12 Years a Slave and Dallas Buyers Club get recognized.
All 2014 Producers Guild Award winners will be announced on January 19th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. This year, the PGA will award special honors to James Bond producing team Barbara Broccoli & Michael G. Wilson (David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures), Disney's Robert Iger (Milestone Award), Peter Jackson & Joe Letteri (Vanguard Award) and the Sundance sensation Fruitvale Station (Stanley Kramer Award), which sadly doesn't seem to be getting any awards traction as many hoped it would after premiering at the independent film festival early in 2013. Thoughts?
It's "Tomi" Ungerer (under documentaries). So good!
