Though he's one of the most iconic comedy stars of all-time, Billy Crystal has laid pretty low key over the past decade. With the exception of voice work in Monsters University, the actor has only starred in a handful of films. We would say that he's picky, but those films have been the terrible comedies Parental Guidance and Small Apartments. But we're rather interested in a new project Crystal has lined up as Variety reports the When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers star will write, produce and star in Which Witch, a new animated film at The Jim Henson Company with Brian Henson in the director's chair. More below!
The film is based on Eva Ibbotson’s 1979 book which follows a wizard who holds a contest among the seven witches of Todcaster to determine which one of them he will marry. Crystal says, "When Brian Henson called me about it, I didn’t know the book. But it’s a fantastic story, and I brought in a wonderful writer, Michael Feldman, and we’ve written a terrific and inventive script. I’ll play a character as well, which will be great fun because he actually has two eyes.” That's obviously a reference to the fact that Crystal's character Mike Wazowski in Monsters Inc. only has one eye. Sounds like it could be fun.
Also, in an interesting throwaway mention in the story, the trade talks about the other projects The Jim Henson Company has in the works. Their latest effort, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, hits theaters today, but they're continuing to expand their feature film slate by reaching into the past. There have been new adaptations of Fraggle Rock and Dark Crystal in development for about four years now, but the trade also mentions a sequel to Labyrinth, the fantasy favorite starring David Bowie, is also in the works. Stay tuned to see what else The Jim Henson Company has up their sleeve.

Crystal still has chops. But he needs to update for the times. His last emcee performance at the Oscars was sad.
