'Bond 24' is Officially Titled 'SPECTRE', Co-Starring Christoph Waltz

December 4, 2014

It's official! The James Bond series continues on by re-introducing the evil organization known as SPECTRE in the next installment titled "Spectre". On Thursday morning at an event held at Pinewood Studios, Eon Productions officially announced the titled of Bond 24 as well as the starring cast of the 24th Bond movie, including Daniel Craig returning as James Bond, 007, along with Christoph Waltz as a villain named "Oberhauser". The title, simply Spectre, alludes to the return of legendary villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who has appeared in a number of classic Bond films as the white-cat-stroking bald villain. No confirmation of the name "Blofeld" yet, but all signs seem to indicate it will indeed be the long-awaited return of the character.

In addition to the title of Spectre, the full cast & crew was confirmed by Eon with production starting next week (leading to release on November 6th, 2015). Daniel Craig returns as Bond, Ralph Fiennes as the new M, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny, and Ben Whishaw as Q. Plus the new cast: Andrew Scott as Denbigh, David Bautista as Mr. Hinx, Monica Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra, Léa Seydoux as Madeleine Swann, Christoph Waltz as Oberhauser. That last group each got their own photo from the event today posted to twitter @007, as seen below. Finally, Sam Mendes (of Skyfall) is returning to direct the movie, joined by Hoyte Van Hoytema (Interstellar) as cinematographer and Lee Smith (Interstellar) as editor.

The new synopsis also revealed today: a cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation, Spectre. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre. Sam Mendes' Spectre will be filming at Pinewood London, Mexico City, Rome, Tangier & Erfoud, Morocco, Sölden, Obertilliach and Lake Altausee, Austria. I'm ready to go already, show me the film! Then again, they have to start shooting first. The script is rewritten by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade, from an original draft by John Logan. If you remember, there was much debate as to whether Sam Mendes would return for another. But he did such a great job with Skyfall.

It was also confirmed that Thomas Newman is the composer, Dennis Gassner is production designer, Jany Temime is the costume designer. The new 007 car will be the Aston Martin DB10, as shown at the event.

Here's a quick set of tweets to follow with the announcement today along with photos of the new cast + logo:

You'll notice in the official poster, the ice cracks after a bullet and forms the Octopus logo (as seen on this ring from an old Bond movie). That's as big of a hint if there is any that Blofeld is returning with SPECTRE:

Blofeld Ring / Ice Spectre

As for my take on this news? I'm quite happy, to be honest, though the title is a bit too blunt. I'm looking forward to finally seeing the return of SPECTRE, which has been a part of many Bond movies of past, but it's almost way too on-the-nose to name it that. There's already plenty of jokes on Twitter, I like this one: "Spectre, Mr Bond?" "No, I was surprised to see 'er." I'm not sure if Waltz will play the perfectly cheesy but iconic Blofeld, however I'm confident he'll be fun and as always I look to Skyfall when I think of how well Sam Mendes handled the modern Bond storyline and thus expect this to be just as good. We'll be watching closely, but for now, those are the details and we're excited to see how this comes together as filming begins.

Monica Bellucci should be the 9th wonder of the world. THAT is a woman.

Hmm, Christoph Waltz, aye? I'm in.

Can't wait, Skyfall is my personal favorite Bond film, and I'm very glad Mendes is returning for Spectre

I feel the exact opposite. Sadly.

It was a complete mess wasnt it?

I dig the title and logo. Chris Waltz. Can't do anything bad IMO. However, Harris was absolutely terrible as MP. Also, I think Dave Arnold is a better Bond composer as Skyfalls score lacked that John Barry vibe. Overall, Skyfall is my least fav of Craig area.

I wish SPECTRE was tied to QUANTUM. I feel like the mystery, evil organ-eye-zation discovered in CR and further uncovered in QoS was summarily dropped. Seems a shame, and I wanted to find out what ultimately happened to Mr. White!

"David Bautista" Haha...sounds so much classier.

Very excited to see how this shapes up! Such a great cast, easily the best of the new Bond era. The new car looks too smooth. // I hope the cat comes back too.

DAVIDPD on Dec 4, 2014

Well, The Bond as intended by Fleming was kind of a rough, cold and brutal killer who smokes and drinks far too much and uses drugs once in a while. The smooth Bond was the interpretation of in particular Sir Roger Moore.
