Comic-Con 2014: Legendary Reveals King Kong Project 'Skull Island'

While many were hoping for some footage from Jurassic World to close out the Legendary Pictures panel at Comic-Con today, instead the audience was treated to a surprise teaser trailer for a project that we hadn't heard of at all before. Now that Legendary has successfully brought Godzilla back to the big screen in a successful way, their new home at Universal Pictures wants to use their power to inject new life into King Kong. The teaser shown soared through choppy waters and to a rainy island while an ominous voiceover alluded to a dark, mysterious place. And that's when the monstrous ape appears, roaring and thumping his chest before the title Skull Island appears. So what the hell is this surprise at Legendary?
A press release reveals that it's inspired by the titular cinematic location, and will explore the "cinematic origins" of King Kong. So that means there's no real ties to Universal's King Kong that Peter Jackson directed back in 2005, but it certainly sounds like the studio is keen to bring the infamous gorilla back to the big screen. Is there a chance we could be leading up to some kind of crossover between Godzilla and King Kong? It doesn't sound completely out of the question, but at this point, we just don't know what to expect. Legendary says they're interested in "staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place" and hope to "take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions." The film is slated for release on November 6th. 2016.

SO fucking stoked for this! I grew up on the 1933 King Kong and LOVED Peter Jackson's King Kong (one of my top 3 fav movies)! I even bought the "Natural History of Skull Island" book that came out after the movie that features all the artwork of the creatures and landscapes Weta designed for the movie. What can be so great about this movie, and from an originality idea standpoint, is that this island has been untouched from humanity and the meteor for 65 million years which means everything, flora and fauna, have evolved since then to present (as we saw in the movie). Which would make for an epic, adventurous, and thrilling exploration movie! I hope this movie ends up happening and happens soon!

Bring back Peter Jackson and I'm all for it. His remake was fantastic.

It was indeed awesome but the length of the movie was to much and that's why it's no classic!

It had flashes of brilliance, and many parts of it were fantastic. But overall I wouldn't rate it that high. I think it was a little over-indulgent. I'm by no means in the ADD 'Make the movie no more than 2 hours or its boring!' crowd. But they stretched that film farther than it needed to be stretched. I'll disregard talking about how I feel the screenplay could have been written in a way that was more compact. Just looking at the theatrical or even the extended cut of the film, there are minutes upon minutes of that movie that could be trimmed or removed with zero negative impact on the film...and many of them include visual effects, and that drives the budget up. There are many times in the movie during certain moments where it feels like you are watching the same shot more than one time. Kong shaking Anne as the camera revolves around them going left, cut to close-up of Anne, then a shot of Kong shaking her almost the same way as the camera pulls back going right, then another close up of Anne. Repetitive shots that tell the same story as the last two shots. It altogether was a little too self-indulgent. It was Jackson's passion project and he obviously had a lot of hopes and wishes for EXACTLY how he wanted certain things to go, and EXACTLY what he wanted in the film...and after LOTR I'm sure Universal was more than happy to let him do whatever he wanted. But I honestly don't think that film needed to be more than 2 hours and 30 minutes or so.

Well Jon...I agree with everything you stated. Length of the movie and all. Some people just like movies better than others. I hope being he put so much time and effort and love into that movie, he'd want to come back and make the prequel...or whatever it's going to be.
