Djimon Hounsou Hits the Jungle with Alexander Skarsgard in 'Tarzan'
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. set a release date of July 1st, 2016 for the return of the classic jungle hero Tarzan in 3D. "True Blood" star Alexander Skarsgard takes the titular role while Margot Robbie will play his romantic companion Jane in the film from Harry Potter franchise director David Yates. For those who haven't heard much about Tarzan, details on the plot are thin, but the studio has said the film will follow the man orphaned as a baby and raised in the jungle as he returns to the urban jungle of London. Now another cast member has entered the mix as Blood Diamond and Gladiator actor Djimon Hounsou has a role.
Deadline says Hounsou will play Chief Mbonga, which seems a little on the nose for the actor from Benin, Africa, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. It's not clear if the character will be an ally of Tarzan or some sort of antagonist, but Hounsou has played a fair share of bad buys in films like Push and The Island. The actor joins a cast that also includes Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson, so this is shaping up to be an interesting cast for sure. But we'll get plenty of Hounsou before 2016 since he voices the bad guy in How to Train Your Dragon 2, faces Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy and has a role in Fast & Furious 7.

With Warner Bros. backing and David Yates at the helm, this movie has the potential to be a blockbuster hit. They'll at least be on the right track if they distance themselves from the old Tarzan movie format. The assembled cast is good except for the lead role. Alexander Skarsgard does not fit the image of Tarzan. This role needs a more athletically muscular, ruggedly handsome actor with darker complexion and black hair.

I think Skarsgard will do a fine job in the role. He's a good actor. Has both lady and dude appeal. Can do menacing as well as humor. Body wise I never saw Tarzan as 'roid muscle bound, but more lean and sinewy. Hair color doesn't bother me either. Hair can be dyed.

The only thing that concerns me is if Tarzan is good for today's movie tastes. Optimistic with the cast and director. Personally I would like it better if it were kept serious like Lambert's Tarzan version and not Transformers in the Jungle. I'm going in to it with an open mind either way.
