Drew Goddard to Helm Spider-Man Villain Spin-Off Film 'Sinister Six'

Towards the end of last year, Sony Pictures announced development of two spin-off films that will focus on villains from The Amazing Spider-Man universe that will be expanded greatly when the sequel arrives next month. The two films were titled Venom and The Sinister Six, and that tells us exactly what each film will focus on. While Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Ed Solomon were hired to write Venom, director Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) was hired to script The Sinister Six, and now THR has learned that he will also direct the comic book spin-off that will unite six of Spider-Man's foes for one film. More below!
It's not clear which villains will form the titular gang of bad guys, but the original line-up featured Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, Mysterio, Vulture and Kraven the Hunter. We already know that Electro is the main villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but unless Spidey completely dispatches with him, it's always likely that he could return later. As for the other villains, we're still not sure. The trailers for next month's sequel has shown that Green Goblin and Rhino are part of the action, and there were also hints of Vulture and Doctor Octopus for keen eyes, but will they all make the cut?
The bigger concern is just how Sony Pictures plans to make an entire film focus on just the bad guys. Will Spider-Man be part of this film at all, or will it just focus on all the villains somehow? It's likely that Venom won't be part of the gang because, as we pointed out, the character has his own spin-off film that Alex Kurtzman will also direct. So how is all this Spider-Man universe building going to play out? Remember, there's a third and fourth Spider-Man film coming in 2016 and 2018, so anything can happen. We're skeptical of these spin-offs for now, but the hiring of Goddard to direct gives us hope. How about you?

Good point. This doesn't sound to good, imo, because it doesn't make too much sense but hopefully Goddard can pull it together.

The protagonist in this could actually be Chameleon as he betrays the Sinister 6 in the comics following orders from his foster dad. Though legally this storyline could be tough because his foster father is The Red Skull.

That's the cartoon. Chameleon has no relation to Red Skull. He is half-brother to Kraven the Hunter.

Interesting, I thought the cartoon was pulled directly from the comics, but alas I've been corrected. Can you think of any other potential protagonists for the film besides Spyd?

Venom. Could be a good tie in with his solo flick.

True, Venom was always sort of an anti-hero anyways.

How about They make a bet - first one to kill 100 people wins...I don't know, something. Supers count as ten. Give me 120 minutes of that.

Let's just wait and see how everyone reacts to The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Let's petition Sony to give back Spidey to Marvel....I'll start a change.org campaign...

The Sinister Six could see a release in 2017 if Venom doesn’t take that slot.

What good is a superhero movie if there are no vilians? Answer: no good. What good is a multiple vilian movie if there are no good guys? Same answer. I am skeptical that not one but many villians would make a movie work if there were no heros to battle them. As much as I love the NYPD, from a comic book world they can't do anything about one super vilian, let alone six. And if these Sinister Six are from the Spidey universe there is no reason to think it won't take place outside of NYC. Curious to be sure, but still skeptical.

I'd say, optimistically, that this will give it the chance to stand out from other movies in this genre.
