Ewan McGregor Rumored to Be in the Running for 'Doctor Strange'

For those who haven't heard, Joaquin Phoenix is officially out of the running for Marvel's forthcoming Phase Three title Doctor Strange. He was in talks, but apparently it just didn't work out. So now Marvel is still looking for a leading man to become the Sorcerer Supreme in the film directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) and written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). And in typical internet fashion, a new rumor has popped up from Badass Digest, citing an untested source, that has pegged Ewan McGregor as doing some research for the role by checking out some comic books. But it sounds like he's one of a few contenders.
That being said, it's not clear what other names might be in the running either. But given the age range of Joaquin Phoenix and Ewan McGregor, who are respectively 39 and 43, they're clearly looking for somebody with experience. Some people have been asking Keanu Reeves whether or not he'd be interested, and that casting sounds like it would be fun. But there's a part of me that wouldn't mind Marvel thinking outside the box and finding a non-white actor to take the role too. But McGregor has experience with mystical powers having been young Obi-Wan Kenobi, and he's a pretty damn good actor, so we'll see what happens. Marvel has to make a decision pretty soon. Who do you want as Doctor Strange?
UPDATE: Variety reports the shortlist for Doctor Strange also includes Jared Leto (who was rumored before), Oscar Isaac, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ethan Hawke. Hopefully Marvel figures this out and makes an announcement soon.

Fantastic. He has the gravitas for the role. I could see him speak the incantations without giggling.

Whoa! I hadn't even thought of Ewan. I think that'd be a good choice. And he should still fight General Grievous. I don't even know who Dr. Strange's villains are. Mephisto? Blackheart? Stilt Man?

Ah! Thanks for being less lazy than I was. His power ratings on that page are kind of disappointing. His intelligence is lower than I would've thought. And he's really fast for just a dude. Maybe that includes teleportation for getting from one place to the next?

Check out the animated Dr. Strange film Marvel released a couple years ago. He's pretty badass in that flick.

Oh I forgot that even existed. As much as I've always loved Marvel, I never cared much about Dr. Strange. I guess I never really liked magic stories. But I'll check that out. Seems like a fun way to do research for the movie. Do you know of any trade paperbacks I should read? I guess they're all called 'graphic novels' now.

I was never into him much either, but I like how all the sorcerers have their own specialty and they're not just "magical". For instance, one of them can summon a snake from their tattoos, and another can control the Sun. It takes a long time to learn these skills so once they get good at one they seem to refine that rather than learn another. That's what makes Doctor Strange so special, he is The Sorcerer Supreme and can do just about anything. The defacto recommended book for a Dr. Strange noob is Doctor Strange: Into Shamballa.

Figures you'd pick something that's out of print. Did you read The Oath? I never did but I'm a huge fan of Brian K. Vaughan. Beginnings and Endings looks good too but who knows. And thanks for the Strange lesson. I'm much better for it.

I love Brian Vaughan and I had no idea he worked on a Doc Strange book. Y The Last Man is one of my favorites of all time.

Mine too! Ex Machina, Runaways and Pride of Baghdad are also pretty excellent. And yeah, I remember his Dr. Strange coming out but it was before I was in love with his work and still, I didn't care about the character. The Oath might be a must read at this point... I can sense we're starting to lose the thread topic.

Someone should. Powers-wise, he's a good villain.

Whether it's for Dr. Strange or not; whether it's a villain or a hero; I really really really want to see Josh Holloway get a role in the MCU. He could play a good Dr. Strange.

He seems like a good choice. He already has enough experience with stuff that isn't really there with the Star Wars movies.

I think Leto would be a good choice. Not my favourite actor or anything, but i think it just fits. I could see him doing it well
