Empire Strikes Back

With production just one month away, we're hoping to finally get some official casting news about Star Wars: Episode VII. However, director J.J. Abrams is still playing things extremely close to the vest, even closer than his previous films, so we're not really sure how much we're going to learn about the anticipated 2015 sequel. But for those who can never have enough Star Wars, the official YouTube channel of the classic saga has been posting some great videos from the past, including this fantastic 15-minute long featurette chronicling the origins of one of the most iconic sci-fi weapons of all-time: the lightsaber. Watch below!

Here's the full featurette The Birth of the Lightsaber straight from the Star Wars YouTube channel:

Some of you may have seen this featurette already, because it arrived with the original trilogy DVD set back in 2004. But there's probably a good chunk of fans out there who haven't checked it out. It features George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars universe, along with original trilogy star Mark Hamill, and famed sound designer Ben Burtt, who was critical in making the sound of the lightsaber we all know today. There's also some cool behind the scenes footage from Return of the Jedi and Star Wars, so it's really a great piece to watch for any Star Wars fan out there. Meanwhile, stay tuned for more news on Episode VII as it arrives.
