James Badge Dale

Way back in 2011, we heard about a new project from Legendary Pictures called Spectral, which sounded like a gritty version of Ghostbusters. The story follows a special ops group whose sole purpose is to take down evil ghosts who have taken over Manhattan. At the time, there were rumblings the project might move away from New York City to avoid the eventual comparison (both legally and creatively) with Ghostbusters, but it sounds like it's different enough that Legendary is moving forward without any changes, and THR has word that they've hired World War Z and Iron Man 3 star James Badge Dale to star in the film. Read on!

The original idea, which has also been called a supernatural Black Hawk Down, came from up and coming writer Ian Fried, whose The Ever After Murders ended up on the 2010 Black List. The writer also has another project called Gaslight, a Gothic serial killer story with Florence Nightengale and Jack the Ripper, which has garnered some attention, but neither script has moved forward yet. Since then, George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau, The Bourne Ultimatum) and John Gatins (Real Steel, Flight) have done rewrites. Commercials director Nic Mathieu is supposed to direct (he's also been linked to Robotech) for his feature film debut, so we'll see how this one turns out. There will probably be a decent ensemble cast lined up for this flick too, so stay tuned for any updates.

This sounds like a take on the novel SEAL Team 666, which I thought The Rock had purchased the rights to for a movie.

I'm a sucker for special ops movies. If they can find the right tone to blend the supernatural and military genres, I'll be down for this. Loved James Badge Dale since seeing him in The Pacific and Rubicon.
